My wife and I popped in for Lunch on Good Friday we had seen this place on a couple of occasions before but had already eaten or not got the time. We both had the whole plaice which was lovely, my wife had the warm polenta cake for pudding which was beautiful.
We will definitely be going back, this is a great place you should try it.

We dined at the Golden Cross over Easter with friends. We had a very enjoyable evening and as usual the food was of very good quality and variation. The service and attention to detail is second to none! Gareth, Theresa and their colleagues are always welcoming and pay attention to detail. It is a lovely quirky atmosphere and it is so different from its time as a pub! The menu is varied and great choice, we all had different meals and they were served together on hot plates. Good choice of wines and beers. It is just a lovely place with lovely people - well done chef!

This is the 3rd time we have dined at this restaurant and again it has not let us down. The food is of a great standard personally I had to start squid and chorizo in a tomato based source, which was delicious. Main course was braised ox cheeks, which melted in your mouth, I would recommend both. My wife had lamb for her main course where she commented that it was one of the nicest meals we have eaten for a while. We are not local to Shrewsbury, but do like to visit a couple of times a year due to the variety and standard of bars and restaurants. The service is attentive and make you very welcome. There is a great choice on the food menue and wine list. We will continue to visit this restaurant. If I was to be Uber critical and as sad as I sound, this sort of restaurant should have cloth napkins, rather than paper ones, I know it sounds picky, but the restaurant is well above pub grub, fast food etc so the little touches count. Anyway just a thought. Keep up the great food as that is what really counts.

I have dined at the golden cross numerous times over the years and it remains my favourite eatery in shrewsbury. The food is lovely and the environment is so cozy, characterful and quirky....and all in the oldest buildings in shrewsbury town! Lovely

My husband and I visited the golden cross for dinner while on a short break to Shrewsbury, we were not disappointed its such a beautiful quirky place like no other restaurant we have ever been to! The owners were so welcoming and friendly we immediately felt at home, the menu was varied with plenty of choices even for me being gluten free. Prices were very reasonable too for the quality of the food and beautiful surroundings we had two courses each and shared a bottle of prosecco and the bill came to just over £70. Can’t wait to visit Shrewsbury again so we come here again!

Went here for lunch. Very nice. Fish and chips absolutely fab- recommend.
Great service - really nice peopleOnly thing that stopped an excellent rating was the price of the wine - just under £9 for a glass of sav b. ( granted, it was a large glass and I wasn’t forced to order it,)
Otherwise - a great place

My wife and I had an excellent meal here the other day. My daughter had recommended the Golden Cross and I'm so glad she did as we found the whole experience a delight.
Full of quirks, comfort and atmosphere, we were welcomed with smiles and a just vacated table was quickly cleared. A wooden settle at the back & heavy wooden upholstered chairs gave us generous room in the crowded restaurant - clear evidence of how successful this establishment is, despite its somewhat off centre location in Princess Street.
Service was attentive and friendly .The local ale was in great condition but proved to be expensive at £4.20 a pint. The chef here clearly has talent and flair: my fish and chips (£14.50) were delicious as was my wife's succulent ham (£15.50): both plates were completely cleared and I finished the generous pot of homemade tartare sauce and all of the chunky chips.
We finished with two lovely desserts (£6.50 each) along with a second ale. The bill came to £47.05 and we left with full bellies and smiles on our faces.

Came here last week with my husband, daughter and her boyfriend- he said it's his favourite restaurant in Shrewsbury.
From the outside, you're looking at a quaint old building, but when you step inside, it really is beautifully quirky and truly welcoming. There is an amazingly eclectic mix of styles and furnishings and we spent a long time trying to decide the 'theme' of the restaurant; it really is a visual treat for the eyes! And that's before we ordered any food or drinks. ( The owner says there is no theme, just a magnificent mix of items they have gathered from home and brought into the restaurant over the years.)
The service was friendly and the staff were very knowledgeable about the wines. The owner recommended one , as our preference had run out, my husband tasted a lovely sample just to be sure we liked it. ( We did.) The menu choices were really good and pretty varied. I couldn't suggest a favourite as we all loved our dishes. Although I would have to say, the prices are maybe a little on the high side, in my opinion it's undoubtedly worth it, because of the whole experience- eat, drink and enjoy a feast for your eyes and palate.
if you're looking for a good meal in the town -this is the place to be - but be sure to book as it looked pretty busy for a Friday night.

What a treat to dine at the Golden Cross. After opening the door, your eyes cast around the room with joy. It's like Aladdin's Cave. Eccentric items very tastefully arranged and stylishly displayed. And then you are greeted by the host and hostess who make you feel like you're a good friend. But you're there to eat, and the fine menu does not fail to deliver. The food is of consistent high quality. I normally have the fish dish - and I can't wait to have it again!

We were a group of 9 who had a delayed xmas party, we couldn't make it on our original date due to poor weather which the golden cross were very understanding about. Everybody really enjoyed their food, only a couple of minor gripes but you can't please everybody. The do is was very tasty and plentiful the drinks were possibly a little expensive but ad the food and service is consistently excellent I'm happy to ensure the golden cross continues on as it is the keep trading in these difficult times. Refreshingly quirky venue run with genuine passion

Received a really warm welcome to this intimate restaurant which is full of old world charm. My husband had the fish pie and declared it to be ‘the best he had ever eaten’ . I had the fish and chips - fabulous! Good choice of wines on offer, great food, friendly and efficient staff - what’s not to love?! Highly recommend

Firstly the setting is what captured me. Quaint collective homely feel with throws, cushions and chandeliers. The food was very well presented, with harmonious flavours, with a background of soft soul music. The price, I was surprised it wasn’t more expensive in comparison to the attention to detail and quality. We will definitely be returning.

Lovely lunch enjoyed by 5 of us to celebrate my birthday. Excellent starters, mains and puddings. One small criticism, chips not to the expected standard. The sweet potato fries however were incredible. Looking forward to our next opportunity to eat at this lovely place. Thank you.

Met a friend here for lunch, we have been several times before but I think it has new owners since our last visit. The food was very good as usual and we were served by very friendly helpful staff. However when looking at the wine list I was aghast at the prices, £24.50 for a bottle of Californian Zinfedel is extortionate, I have never paid more than £15 for this wine even in a 5 star restaurant so only 4 stars given. Hopefully others will object to the high prices and refrain from buying it and the owners will look again at their charges.

A family meal for 10 in lovely room with Christmas tree but what made this really nice was the food was not just good but was truly great. I had warm smoked salmon which was sublime ,my main course was traditional turkey but it really was one of the best I have had moist with excellent gravy stuffing and lots of vegetables
We all loved it and we will come again

Every year we have a day in Shrewsbury as we have our car serviced at a dealership here despite living near Nantwich. Every year we visit the Golden Cross for lunch and it never disappoints ! This year was no exception, we had a glass of the wonderful Viognier and I chose the chicken on a bed of macaroni cheese with vine tomatoes....... doesn't sound over exciting ? Well it was fabulous . Here's looking forward to next year !!

We had such a fun lunch at The Golden Cross. Hidden down a period side street just off the High Street, it delivers a antidote to chain restaurants via an enjoyable dose of eccentricity with decor which is both individual to the extreme and very tasteful, with period antiques and a huge amount of attention to detail. The staff are welcoming, fun and they care. Food- wise, exteremely good as well!

Well, what a weekend. Booked into this little gem for 1 night on Saturday and had the evening meal. Great atmosphere and great food. Owners very laid back and quirky and compliment each other perfectly. Fantastic atmoshere at dinner which was front of house and included the bar. The whole place oused character and dated back some 700 years, the bedroom was well decorated and 21 century expectations mingled with the ancient.
Breakfast on Sunday morning was an absolute revelation. Seated where we sat the night before,we were treated to a beautiful mixture of homemade breads, honey and jam. Full cooked Shropshire breakfast was hot and perfectly cooked . The coffee was smooth and delightful.Well done Golden Cross,we will be definitely back again. Thank you so much for the Camembert recipe, will be using that at the end of November. Oh and thanks for the wine when we returned after midnight on the Saturday

As a building, the Golden Cross is rather wonderful and enticing, but it just doesn't quite flow or work as a restaurant.
The food is ok, I recall having seabass - it tasted fine but rather sloppily presented and overpriced for the quality of the fish and sides.
I'd stick to drinks/dessert here

Having moved to Shrewsbury over 12 months ago. We finally came in to The Golden Cross. Without a doubt the best Fillet Steak I’ve had since being here. Great Atmosphere, staff are very attentive. Interesting eclectic interior. Fabulous wine list. We will be back.

The great thing about this place is its uniqueness. The trend these days is for everything to be predictable and part of a chain. This restaurant is boldly individual and in a good way. One feels a part of the local culture and when the excellent service and food are added in it is well worth a visit, indeed I would suggest more than one visit. The food was very well cooked and portion size just right. I had overseas guests visiting and this proved just the right place to take them for the last night of their stay. I will certainly returning. I would suggest bookings are essential.

And the food is pretty damn smart too. If a restaurant takes care over its bread, proper sourdough and a good whole meal, you know that you are in good hands. Salted almonds, proper olives ,all reinforce this. And ....butternut squash arancini, well cooked fish, and fabulous puddings. This is very good food. The wine list .... Muscat de Beaumes de Venise ! It is really very good, and served with charm and knowledge. The building
is well restored, and furnishings are eclectic, comfortable and well...just charming. Shrewsbury is very lucky to have such a jewel.
