Beautifully cooked food. Helpful, friendly owners and staff. Love the quirky, comfortable, (lots of nice squashy cushions) and original interior decor. Such a welcome change from wooden scrubbed floors and tables and loud muzak.

Went in for lunch with a friend,we both chose the fish pie. The mashed potato was tasty and lots of it . Three prawns,a few bits of fish, a few peas and spinach chucked in with lots of sauce . The dish was tasty but not hot , and a little coleslaw on the side . £15.50 later ,was it worth it . Not for me ! fill the fish pie with fish and maybe a few veg and deliver the meal hot . But the service was plesent.

Booked in for 2, had to leave a review... the food, the ambience and the service. All fabulous. To put it simply, if you fancy high end food in a place full of history, then try it. We had a Porchetta and a Hake for main and then two wonderful desserts, wine, rum and great service. Mmmmmm.

The Gold Cross was a truly amazing place to eat, especially at Christmas. The lights were twinkling and the atmosphere was great. We were a table of eight, not from Shrewsbury, and from the moment we walked in we were looked after. Nothing was too much trouble, the service was outstanding and the food was absolutely delicious. A top night and we will definitely return and recommend to others!

I visited this restaurant for the first time with 3 friends as a special Birthday Lunch. I arrived before they opened to decorate the table and the staff were very helpful. The menu was excellent without being too big. My Roast Beef was the best I have had in a very long time. We had arranged a cake for my friend which the staff brought out without being prompted and offered us cream to go with it!! Brilliant. We stayed longer than we thought as the atmosphere was so relaxing. It was also less expensive than I was expecting. Will be returning very soon!!

Spontaneous Saturday supper with friends. Fabulous! The food was exceptional - we all ate different mains but can highly recommend the vegetarian options (which are very good and also cater for those of us with dietary restrictions) and the boys are still raving about their superb steak.
Service and atmosphere warm, welcoming and professional - delightful waitress. A wonderful evening and we cannot wait to visit again!

Been here several times and never left a review so here goes..Visited here on a Saturday evening with family. Met by the hostess and shown to our table..drinks ordered and arrived promptly. Wonderfully "quirky" interior and it's bigger than you think with another room behind the bar. The menu was varied with some unusual items. Examples of the starters were: Warm stilton cheesecake on walnut crust with pickled pear, Cornish crab & crayfish cocktail with avocado, mango & lime dressing, Baked Camembert, wood smoked garlic with sourdough dipping sticks and Home smoked spare ribs with grain mustard & honey glaze, shaved fennel & apple slaw to name but a few. I had the ribs, absolutely delicious and my wife had the crab and crayfish cocktail which she also enthused about. Moving to the mains again a great varied selction. I had Slow roast Italian porchetta with garlic & rosemary potatoes, red cabbage & caramelised apples which again was fabulous and my wife had the Fresh haddock fillet in a light beer batter with hand cut chips, mint pea puree & tartare sauce which was gorgeous. As sure as night follows day we then moved to sweets: Dark chocolate & Cointreau mousse, spiced kumquats and pouring cream made it's way to my wife's setting and I gratefully received the Orange blossom panacotta, pomegranate syrup & shortbread. I have to say this was the weakest course for me. I didn't think the panacotta was set properly so in my opinion a little slimy. The flavours were lovely but I didn't like the candied peel on top, but that's a personal thing..wouldn't go for this again. However I have to finish on a high...we had a lovely meal and a wonderful evening. The food was great, the service was great and I'll be back..as the addage goes!

We found this very unusual place, at the end of an alleyway. We thought it was a pub, given the name, but it's actually more like a quirky living room in a private house. Really traditionally furnished with antiques and dark wood furniture.
We only wanted a light lunch. There were several possibilities. Just suited us fine. The patron was friendly and helpful. In all a lovely cosy experience.

Enjoyed a delicious meal here, with a great range of dishes that were all so tempting it was hard to choose. But the hot smoked salmon with gingerbread crust was a revelation. So much so, I’m going to try it at home. Staff and hosts were very welcoming too and it should have been a perfect evening. I just wish fellow diners wouldn’t broadcast so loudly. I really don’t care to hear about about Bake Off, Strictly or whatever is going to be the next big thing!

Take your time to search out this first class eatery. When you arrive and enter into the main restaurant take time to absorb the ambiance and admire the decor.
The entire staff from the top down are first class without being fussy. The seating is comfortable, without being cramped in the limited space. The food is fantastic without being over the top. I recommend you experience this little place for yourself, ran by a couple who what to keep the "dinosaur" alive..

Some lovely friends bought us a gift voucher to dine here for our wedding anniversary so we booked and dined - we knew we were in safe hands from the get-go! Great quirky atmosphere and stylish, elegant decor complimented by good food at a decent price. I had Coq au Vin - perfectly good, and my lovely wife had fish pie, which she enjoyed.
This place isnt exactly pushing the envelope, cutting edge or challenging anyone's preconceptions but it seems reliable, honest and pleasant. We enjoyed our kind gift and can recommend the experience here.

We were mooching about Shrewsbury and happend upon the The Golden Cross and instantly fell in love with it’s gorgeous decor and it drew us in like a magnet.
We immediately booked for dinner as we knew we’d love to dine there. Theresa made us feel very welcome and we ordered a pint and enjoyed passing the time in the beautiful surrounds.
Dinner did not disappoint and the food was absolutely delicious and the ambience and atmosphere of their marvellous restaurant was splendid and Theresa and Gareth are the perfect hosts and they even gave us wonderful travel tips and suggestions for our next few stops.
We loved our experience and it was one of the special highlings on our adventure and if we’d known ahead of time they had a B&B we definitely would have stayed over too.

Three of us went for a birthday dinner, and (once again) it was outstanding. Laid back, except the brilliant cooking. If you have not been before, just go.

Loved the decor and cosy feel to the restaurant. Couldn’t fault it. Team very knowledgable and passionate about the menu which I loved. Will be back!

I absolutely loved the food and the service was great. I would recommend the restaurant to everyone. The hotel was cosy and comfortable and the lounge for the hotel guests was accessible and welcoming. However when it got to the night, i could hear everything from the restaurant. I’m not sure if this was because my room was above the restaurant but the noise was loud and it wasn’t so easy to sleep. Despite this i think you can book a room on the highest floor which is more expensive and up there you couldn’t hear the loud noise from the restaurant. But definitely a place to go for something to eat.

What a hidden gem - I have never eaten in a restaurant quite like this before! From the moment we opened the solid wooden door into the restaurant we could tell we were in for a good evening. It is warm & welcoming, and as other reviewers have said, an Aladdin’s cave full of unusual & quirky things, creating a lovely atmosphere. The menu is wide ranging and includes lots of different flavours and interesting ingredients. I had the warm Roquefort cheesecake with walnut crust to start (extremely delicious), the duck with cherry sauce for the main and poached peaches with meringue, mascarpone & passion fruit ice cream to finish. Gorgeous meal. Service was friendly and attentive. Would definitely recommend and hope to return.

Service was very good; friendly and attentive, without being overwhelming. Felt incredibly relaxed in the comfortable dining room. Has been excellently renovated now with an enclosed outdoor patio and tasteful WC’s. Food was home made and very well cooked; I did notice a couple of the served items didn’t match the menu description, but the substitutions were fitting and perfectly cooked. No need to kick up a fuss over that. This chef knows how to cook and make an extremely satisfying meal, and the front of house staff keep you well watered with some great wine. Thank you

Oh my, The restaurant owner and his wife were a delight. Having no reservations on a Saturday night we took a chance and turned up. We sat at the sweet table in front enjoying our cocktails and dinner. Two happy American gals!!
