We booked to go here and when we arrived although there was only one other couple in the restaurant we were shuffled off to the room at the back. The smell of frying fat was very strong and it made me feel a little sick so we asked to be moved to the front room. When we came to pay the bill my husband mentioned this but to be honest I don't think the owner could have cared less. Needless to say we have not been back.

Overall my partner and I have visited this restaurant half a dozen times over the last couple of years and in our opinion it can be relied upon if you want a lovely meal and a great atmosphere. The place has a quirky decor which adds to the atmosphere. The menu is changed regularly and the choice is quite small but there is something for everyone. The food is excellent and uses locally sourced ingredients and is fairly priced for the quality. The only downside is the slightly miserable head waiter but not too bad that it spoils the experience.

Good food and surroundings. Service a bit hurried on the one occasion we went there.

I've eaten here a few times, the atmosphere is really good, food excellent and the staff are great making it a really nice experience. Its just off the market square down a quiet street, really close to the Old Market hall cinema so you can go there before or after the film.

We eat regularly in Shrewsbury as residents of the town; the Golden Cross is consistently our restaurant of choice. The food is well conceived and well delivered. Good flavours are present across the menu. The food is quite traditional, this is not a place to explore the latest fad but equally it isn't stuck in a time warp and all the new favourites are there including gorgeous belly pork and slow cooked fore cuts. The atmosphere is extremely warm and cosy and the staff are always friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend a visit.

I visited the Golden cross at the beginning of January with my colleagues to celebrate our christmas staff party. The golden Cross looked after us so so well, they had another party on that night but we were given our own private room, our own waitress and Gareth, the owner came to see us several times to make sure that we were happy and OK. The food was delicious, served hot and very seasonal. The room was also decorated beautifully and we were all made to feel very special.
The previous review "disappointed because it was always perfect before" - I just wish to make the point that it seems terribly unfair that you have been to the Golden Cross many times and always loved it and yet you have never written a good review, but you have waited for the 1 bad time to write a bad review. Your experience tells you that this is an excellent place and if they have got it wrong once it is probably a genuine error and not worth pasting on a public site like Tripadvisor where it could potentially harm their business.Good luck for the future Golden Cross!!

Have been there at least 5 times before and had always been very impressed. I always recommend it to friends as a great place to eat in Shrewsbury.
The service is excellent, the ambiance warm and quirky and the menu is interesting and varied. This time I was disappointed becasue my main course was served on a cold plate so my food went cold quickly. I had trout fillets which were served with the skin on but the skin was not crisped up at all. Also some of the surfaces in the restuarant seemed to be dusty. My partners steak was cooked rare even though he had asked for it medium and his chips were also undercooked. I think based on this visit I will not be rushing back unfortunately.

Golden Cross - ? cruising on your good reviews, don't sit back. As a regular return customer I was a little disappointed with this visit. Nothing terrible, but I felt your usual excellent service and standards have perhaps slipped. The place was freezing, I was so cold I had to put my husbands coat on over my dress. My mother never removed her thick cardigan all meal. No one to great us, and when you did we were not remembered. Mains arrived but the vegetables were another 5 minutes. My fish was good, not great. Your belly pork was superb! Pudding, unremarkable. Service was ok but then it felt like you were hurrying us up towards the end. Don't sit back, your a fantastic restaurant, when in Shrewsbury your the place I want to book but in today's market you cant become complacent.

Went here for our Christmas party. The decor is quirky and cosy - loved it! The service wasnt great - but I suppose this can be excused due to the party season... It was a case of forgotton drinks, slow to get some people dishes out when others had theirs etc. But apologies were made and most of the wait staff were friendly. The food however stole the show! Beautifully presented and tasted even better. Everyone enjoyed it (particular compliments to chef on the beef and the pannacotta!) The best food I've had out in Shrewsbury for a long time - the prices reflect the high standard of the food and I would be happy to go back tomorrow!

Celebrated a big birthday with family & friends. Delivered a cake & candles at lunchtime before our visit in the evening. Menu was excellent - food even better! My husband had steak (usually a disappointment) which was cooked to perfection. Good wine list at reasonable prices. Staff were attentive but unobtrusive. The cake was served on a fabulous stand and the owner then provided a jug of cream to go with it.
Highly recommend it and will definitely visit again - soon!

This restaurant is a little quirky in it's decor which brings a lovely ambience as soon as you enter.
Most of us decided on the pan fried chicken with potatoes, mushrooms & sauce and we all agreed it was delicious! One of my friends is vegetarian so had a goat cheese tartlet which she also enjoyed. Puddings were yummy, I had chocolate panacotta with chocolate ice-cream. The service is just right. This is the second time I've been to this restaurant and I will continue to go.

We recently took a group of our family here for a special occasion. The food was amazing and the Sunday lunch menu is excellent value for the quality of food. Everyone in our party of 20 was impressed with the food. The venue itself has the wow factor when you walk in. This is the perfect place to have a winter meal as it has the magic factor. !

First off, there is nothing to say that is bad or off-putting. I took an oversees client there and he thought the decor was typically "Old English". I would have said it was more "confused".
We did starters which were top drawer, and mains which were good without really exciting the palate. With a beer and a coffe each it came to £25 per head and I reckon that is a fair price. It was a Tuesday evening in November and almost every table was taken, so it would be as well to book in advance. Despite the full restaurant, the food arrived in a timely manner, though we did have to wait a little for the bill.A new menu is available from 17th November and I will return to give it another go.

I was really looking forward to trying the Golden Cross after reading great reviews on trip advisor.
The food was good. Starters were excellent. Main course was good however my husbands steak came served on top of his chips which made the chips (which were undercooked in any case) a bit soggy.
We we're dissappointed with the service and stmosphere. The staff were pretentious and held themselves in high regard. We could over-hear them making snobby remarks the whole time we were in there which was totally off putting.
Dont think we would return. Mad Jacks is much better food and nicer atmosphere.

Ate here with colleagues. We all had a fantastic meal - very reasonable for the quality. Great service. Very intimate restaurant as it is very tiny, but seemed very popular even on a Tuesday night. The decor is a mix of traditional, sequins and animal print with a disco ball for good measure!!!

The Quality of the food was excellent. I can understand remarks about the decor-definitely quirky- and the cramped seating but to call the food bland seems bizarre to me. We all five of us enjoyed our meals and all three courses were great. Portions are good-not huge-but plenty and three courses was pushing it. The wines were very good and £18 to £22. They did house wine by the glass too which didn't seem to be on the menu. The seating is pub style in places and we were three on a bench which was too cosy. Our welcome was poor and that is the reason for the average on service. We were met with a vague wave and "your tables in the back room on the left" and were left to it, coats and all. The waiting staff were lovely. Would definitely go back for the good food.

We have visited this restaurant many times before, usually for the great value 'Sunday' menu. This weeks experience was very disappointing......clearly the owner was away. The usual warm and friendly atmosphere was lacking. Two young ladies serving, both seemed to have negative and unhelpful attitudes. The portions were mouse size and when we questioned this, the waitress simply told us that she 'doesnt usually work Sunday's'. However, later in the meal they did bring out more beef. We will give the Golden Cross another go and lets hope this expereince was a one off!

I very much enjoyed the The Golden Cross' Butternut squash gnocchi, squash purée, Dolcellate cheese, with sage but felt there should've been much more choice for vegetarians. The food was quite good but restricted choice means we will be unable to partonise very often.

I thought I knew Shrewsbury quite well, but I had never stumbled across this restaurant before as it is tucked away in a back street. What a find!! Pleasant ambience, friendly staff, delicious reasonably priced food, quality local ales - an ideal place for Sunday lunch. We had decided at the last minute to try Shrewsbury for our anniversary meal and should have booked in advance, but thought we would wander around the town and suss out what was on offer. Looking inside the Golden Cross it seemed very busy (always a good sign) so we ventured in and were lucky enough to get the last table. We were both very happy with our meal. The service was quite slow, but this suited us on this occasion. My only tiny grumble was that there was not more vegetarian choice. I can highly recommend this restaurant.
