My husband and I had a fantastic lunch here - he had the steak and kidney pudding and I had the slow braised pork and salad - sounds an odd combination but it was amazing. We must return soon it was so good. It's quite quirky inside and very inviting. Friendly and efficient staff made it a great experience.

The room is lovely with great lighting. Food was good pub food. Nice for Sunday lunch. There are so many good places to eat in the town it made this one seem a bit lacking.

Good choice of food, although not so good for any vegetarians. Use local suppliers and seasonal food in imaginative menus.

Very good restaurant just off the main roads in Shrewsbury. Very old style restaurant with a lot of charm. Excellent service and great food, not rushed and provided with the greatest of detail. Good value and would recommend

A great place to eat, caters for all sorts, if you want a cheap ish lunch there's a prix fixe menu, we ate in the evening and it was gorgeous! Intersting vegetarian options and very tasty fish n chips!
The wine was pricey but worth it as it was gorgeous!

We found this by chance while escaping the hordes of Morris Dancers at lunchtime. We were looking for a quiet place for a snack and a beer and liked the look of this from the outside. We weren't looking to have a main meal but the standard of the food looked terrific from what others were eating around us. I loved the decor (genteel, cosy and a hint of opulence) - not what one was expecting from a city centre pub. As we only had snacks and drinks I can't comment on the quality of the main menu so can only give this a four star for now. But the idea of staying in the pub for a weekend is very enticing given the surroundings and the very happy looks on the face of those eating. The best part of the visit was the service - the staff had no problem about us shifting tables / chairs to sit our party of six. Our snacks and drinks were served with as much care and attention as those having main meals.

We stumbled across The Golden Cross more or less by accident. The menu looked good so we decided to give it a try. I expected to see a very standard pub but it is jaw dropingly gorgeous, like something from a film set. Lots of plush fabrics, beautiful lamps, proper tall candles and just enough sequins to set it all off.My husband and I couldn't stop remarking about it. It was very busy for a Wednesday evening which was a good sign. We were welcomed by a very friendly, stylish lady who upon hearing that we didn't have a reservation told us not to worry as she would find something for us. How refreshingly different from the usual sharp intake of breath and shaking of heads! The food was gorgeous (chicken with red pepper ragout and belly pork) and beautifully presented and service was efficient and friendly.Real ale as well to keep to keep hubby happy. Would we go back? You bet! In fact we have already booked to stay there during next years flower festival. This place is a real must do and I understand that there are plans for a small courtyard garden as well.

We used to spend every Sunday here for a long time but it seems to have become a little sad. It's not the food quality so much as the presentation. We hope that things improve as we used to really love their roast lunches but there are better places for that in the town now and we hope they keep up and get us back.

Whilst perusing the outside menu, two diners emerged with glowing reports of their meal.
So we gave it a try and were not disappointed. We received a warm welcome and good service, and found the surroundings convivial and the atmosphere relaxed.Lamb and home made steakburger were top quality and the house red most acceptable.
Just a couple of observations. The butter could be better presented, and espresso was not the best.

I have been going to Golden Cross since it opened circa 10 years ago and I am still going back and if I don't like a place I never go back.

Whilst visiting Shrewsbury for a day trip, we stumbled across this little beautiful place, lovely decor and atmosphere, we were made to feel welcome immediately. Upon looking at the menu, prices may seem a tad pricey, but you see why when the food arrives, brilliantly arranged and absolutely gorgeous. I ordered a prawn and salmon sandwich, but unlike any sandwich I've had, lovely toasted bread with salad and avocado, thick slices of salmon with prawns, I'd recommend this to anyone and when visiting Shrewsbury again, will most certainly pop in to try something else on the menu. Staff were lovely also and very helpful. Thank you Golden Cross.

As the title says, only been in once, but had a delightful meal, great service and excellent real ale, which is something I like. Its not in anyway commercial and everything is cooked to order - no ping food. I will be going again soon with my partner.

You might walk past this gem as it blends in with it's surroundings however the food definitely stands out. Ordered the pork belly and a "slab" of pork arrived. Black pudding mash was gorgeous which led me to making it at home now. Only slight complaint was that the starters didn't seem to have much variety. Don't let this put you off though. Simply wonderful.

We had the set Sunday lunch menu which at around £16.75 for three courses was excellent value. The choice was varied and the food was delicious.
This restaurant is consistently good and the ambience is great.

Absolutely stunning lunch and amazing staff. We emailed to book and informed them that I had an egg allergy and my sister had a gluten intolerance and on arrival the landlady had gone through the whole menu so she could say exactly what was in what! The Duck starter was out of this world, probably one of the best i've eaten. The wine is quite expensive but that really is the only negative. Beautiful setting and lovely food.

We couldn't have asked for anything more. Friendly staff. Exquisite surroundings. Exquisite food. It was our wedding anniversary so we wanted something a bit special and this was it. It was my first visit to Shrewsbury but luckily a friend of a friend recommended it. We started by sharing a smoked haddock fish cake. I wasn't sure if I'd like it so I just wanted a taste and it was beautiful - very light and crisp and delicate of flavour. For the main my husband had belly pork with pasta which he loved and I had steak and chips - the steak was done to perfection. Creme brulee and lavendar shortbread finished off the perfect end to what had been a rather cold and very wet Mayday in Shrewsbury. Thank you Golden Cross.

We had lunch here and found the service, surroundings and menu excellent. My wife had the fish special, which was an excellently cooked and presented lemon sole. I had the Tuna salad which consisted of excellent ingredients but was ruined by the potatoes and tuna being served ice cold, rather than cool or room temperature, unfortunately this ruined the experience for me but I will give the Golden Cross another try but opt for a hot dish.

A small family run establishment in the centre of Shrewsbury - one of the oldest inns in town. Lovely warm and intimate ambience. Excellent service. The menu, whilst small offers consistantly good food. The wine is also very good.
Upstairs is a lovely room where private dining is available for upto 12 people - roaring log fire, squishy seating, candlit table and personal service - great for those special occasions!Love it!
