We were taken here by local friends and were very happy to spend our (long) Friday lunch here. The waitress was most kind and we were seated in the lovely back room. The Golden Cross must be one of the oldest buildings in Shrewsbury and it is very tasty decorated.
The food and wine are excellent so all in all a great place to eat!

Very good night out with an excellent menu. Service very good but would not make it a regular venue as rather pricey. If you want special occasion it is the place to go. Good atmosphere, enjoyable evening.

I took my partner out to lunch to celebrate her passing her British driver's license. We walked in the back way--don't ask me how, but went through to the correct dining area and were pleasantly surprised by a real funky, pleasant atmosphere. Our waitress was lovely, inviting and friendly. The menu is rather "fancy" with its description of the food. I ordered the appetizer portion of fresh raw salmon with dill mayo and bilini and a pickle salad (£7.95). My driver got fish and chips (£12.95). We had a pint of Guinness and a 1/2 pint of lager and lime. My salmon was fine, fresh and pink. The accompaniment was a 3" in diameter bilini with little flavor. I've never had a couple of sliced pickles in my salad but it all tasted fine. The fish was prepared excellently but the chips may not have been cooked twice and were slightly uncooked. What's up with the chefs not cooking chips properly since they are such a mainstay in the English diet and so ubiquitous in all restaurants and/or pubs. We enjoyed ourselves but it's not an everyday-type of place to eat due to the price point and too much competition in Shrewsbury. Check it out because it is pleasant and good enough for a try.

Having read the mixed reviews I wasn't completely confident of a good evening but it turned out very well.
My whitebait starter was very generous and the cassoulet for the main course was excellent. The only quibble I had was with the wine which I felt was a bit pricey at £7.00 for a 250ml glass of merlot.
Overall I thought the meal was very good and the service likewise. A cosy place with a welcoming atmosphere.

Nineteen of us helped celebrate a friend's birthday here last night, April 5th. We had a beautiful Tudor function room all to ourselves, with a real fire, sumptuous furnishings, and an anachronistic mirror ball above the table. We had a set menu for £24.50. My potted cornish crab starter, with lemon, nutmeg & cayenne butter and warm toasted oatmeal farl was excellent. My wife also enjoyed her gorgonzola, caramelised walnut & mulled pear salad. Our mains of slow-roast shoulder of lamb, scented with fresh turmeric & cinnamon served with minted cous-cous, pomegranates & smoked aubergine purée were imaginative and delicious. For dessert, espresso panacotta with pistachio biscotti was nice, without being stunning, and the same could be said of the treacle, lemon & walnut tart with clotted cream.
To drink, we had a zesty white Rioja, Vivanco made from Viura and Malvasia grapes, and this cost £22.50,
Only one waitress was employed to serve us, and Charlotte did a sterling job, even running separate drinks tabs for everyone. We thought that the establishment could have provided Charlotte with a companion, particularly considering that our party would have spent in excess of £700 between us.
All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and one I would be delighted to repeat. My only slight criticism would be that the choices of desserts might have been more enticing.

Excellent food, beautifully presented! Good ambiance, the decor was quirky and random but it worked, low lighting and chilled music, but the tiger print tablecloths were a bit tacky and bizarre! The food beats everything though, it was so good and so tasty I would have been happy to eat it in a barn! The set menu with three courses was very good value for money and the food was obviously very fresh and prepared with love and care. Absolutely delicious, so good that it prompted me to write my first ever TripAdvisor review!

Came here on some recommendations from friends. The food did not disappoint but boy was it cold! It turns out that the boiler broke down earlier that day. But until another customer mentioned the lack of heat to the staff no word of explanation or apology was given. If someone came to dinner at my house and the central heating was out of order, it would be the first thing I mentioned. I would also have borrowed some heaters! But no 'sorry' for the cold, no hots drinks on the house. What a pity. A great example of how to drive customers away.

Visited this restaurant for the first time, for Saturday lunch. It was quite busy and booking is strongly advised. We got a very friendly welcome and there was a choice of two well kept real ales, quite unusual in a restaurant. I had slow cooked belly pork which was excellent, which came with a fondant potato rather than the usual mash. The rest of the accompaniments were good, perhaps slightly bland. My friend had the wild mushroom open ravioli (which also comes as a starter) and was very pleased with it. For dessert I had an espresso panna cotta which was really good. The prices were, I thought, just a little bit higher than the food justified. Could not fault the service, prompt and friendly.

Four of us spent New Year's Eve at the Golden cross and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Right from making the reservation the experience was just great. The atmospheric nature of the Golden Cross has been enhanced by the way the owners have decorated and furnished the place and as customers, we were made very welcome. Service was delightful and the drinks were excellent - good range and all high quality. The menu was full of variety and vegetarians very well looked after. Our meals were delicious. We had a grand evening and will certainly return. this is a place you should try!

90 quid for a starter a main and a bottle of wine, very mediocre meal, had better at a pub for a fraction of the price, strikes me that there is an air of superiority from some staff, the place also could do with a bit of a vaccum on the over cluttered ornaments, soft furnishings. Average, shame as our first visit was top notch

No words can justify how incredible this place is. Food, decor, atmosphere, staff all outstanding. Good job I don't live in Shrewsbury or I would have a very large credit card bill eating here every night.

A lovely meal for two but when we paid for the bill of £70 with two £50 notes no change was given. We had to ask and £30 had already been put in the tip jar. A bit of cheek as, although we were happy to tip, certainly not that amount.

This restaurant, (and some rooms), is very old, 15th Century I think. The beamed building has been made different by the choice of decor which is somewhat quirky, but very nice all the same. The food is modern classics, ie belly pork, good steaks, fresh fish dishes all well cooked and presented. Main courses between £12 - £20, all food is cooked to order. Excellent real ales and wines served too. All in all a good place to go and having been a number of times the food was the same good standard each time. Would advise booking as they are popular. I believe their Sunday Lunches are popular and good value, but I haven't been yet.

My partner & I took a chance and went in early without booking in advance. We were reluctantly offered a small table adjacent to the only other diners (at that time, the room filled up later).
We both ordered the belly pork, which was excellent, with great veg, the roast potatoes were particularly good (not deep-fried) & the crackling was brilliant. The only aspect that let the meal down was the welcome (which was poor, the landlord gave us the impression that we were an inconvenience not valued customers) & the time it took to pay the bill. Although the two staff were busy I am not used to waiting 20 mins to pay, in the end I went to the bar myself.
The food was excellent, but sadly we won't be returning to enjoy the welcome.

Shrewsbury is such a lovely town with many tucked away secrets that are worth finding. One of these in a central position down a shutt (a small passage way between buildings) is "The Golden Cross". This Fifteenth Century gem has a lovely, intimate restaurant which is cosily beautiful and old fashioned in the best historical sense. It is family run and offers a warm welcome, great food ( reasonably priced) and a lovely atmosphere. Step back in time for a delicious meal. Strongly recommended. We shall return.

As every year we booked a table here for my parents anniversary on the christmas eve. Lovely atmosphere, amazing food which was also a great sized portion and friendly staff. My favourite restaurant in Shrewsbury without doubt!

I have lost count of how many times I have been here and every single time I have had an exceptional experience. The food is seasonal, fresh and delicious. The service is outstanding and I would say that it is very good value for money considering the extremely high standard of the food. A place that is always consistent and has never disappointed.

I have eaten here probably 4 - 5 times a year over the past 7 years. If I want a high level of food and drink, good service and nice atmosphere this is where I come. Without a doubt the most consistent restaurant in the town.

If it's a special occasion or a special person, I usually go here. Both the food and the personal service are always excellent. It's pricey, but worth it.
