I can't speak for the rest of the rooms but, Room 1.....oh. my. God.....it is totally amazing. We went in, expecting nothing more than a four poster tudor style room but what we got was simply stunning. It was a split two floored small apartment almost, it had a largish room with the aforementioned four poster bed, a seperate mini lounge with leather sofa,an upstairs bathroom with a deep bath and a seperate shower room and toilet. It was simply breathtaking. The decor was classy with a hint of camp. Deep red lampshades trimmed with feathers, cowskin rugs, zebra print chaise longue, beachwood panelling and the bed, it had a mattress to die for, it was so comfy.
As far as faults go, there were a couple of minor issues that would have made this room unbeatable. First was the lack of blinds in the bathroom and toilet, from the church opposite people at night could easily see inside so keep covered in both these rooms. The flooring and stairs were extremely slippy, be warned, take a pair of slippers. The tv was tiny, unwatchable from the sofa but, then again we didn't go for the tv. And lastly the bath...not a fault of the hotel, more a fault of my rotund design, it's lovely but really badly designed. It had a spring loaded plug right in the center of it so laying down in it was impossible because every time you moved the plug would release and let water out.
We booked into the restaurant but as it was busy we couldn't get a table until nine, this solved the tv issue! Again the decor was a mish mash of styles, part country kitchen, part hunter's lodge and part living room, again all done with a hint of camp! Ram horns decorated with diamante jewellry and scatter cushions everywhere but somehow it just worked, it was very comfy and had a wonderful atmosphere.
The food was excellent and the menu had a good mix of food to suit all tastes ranging from the classier fare to fish and chips and all reasonably priced.
All in all this was a wonderful location, a hidden gem of a hotel and definitely worth going back to. In fact we have already booked another stay.

Have been here a few times and I’ve never been disappointed! Excellent food and they always have a varied menu, and the owners always make us feel very welcome. We love the fact that it’s a little quirky too, we highly recommend a visit.

Such a beautiful little place. Small seasonal menu that is always delicious. There is an incredible room upstairs available for private hire. I love it.

We have eaten at the Golden Cross for a while now and always have a wonderful time with lovely food. The menu is varied and a real treat but its the wonderful medieval atmosphere in such a beautiful old building which makes its 5 * along with the owner who always make us very welcome. We have a B & B just outside Shrewsbury and we are lucky to have such a great place to send our guests who want to go somewhere really special. Thanks to all the team for one of Shrewsbury's gems. Really superb.

Great atmosphere, quite quirky, wonderfully friendly and welcoming! Another brilliant meal - food beautifully presented and served. Always bring my friends from out of town here -they think it is marvellous!

Called in for a lunchtime sandwich because the Panty round the tuner was full. Heard good reports about the Golden Cross so decided to give it a try.
We thought it was a pub restaurant and were pleasantly surprised to discover a quirky, chintzy interior. Good varied menu with plenty of choice. I had a pulled pork sandwich which was tasty, although the ciabatta was soggy because of too much BBQ sauce. My wife' sandwich however comprised of one slice of bread and a small pile of watercress for £6-95!!!Total bill for 2 sandwiches and 2 coffees was £20.
Nice food but not worth the price. There are plenty of other eating places in town which offer better food at a more reasonable price.

Small, genuine, historical, quirky decor, personal attention. For a couple of nights I can't think of anywhere better. Restaurant busy with non residents and food good but not gourmet. Atmosphere a bit like having dinner in a tea room but very charming. Our room had lovely 6 ft bed and loads of feather pillows with enormous drench shower room
Only complaints-not enough cupboard space and no drawer space, no shelf or table to put make up/wash bags etc, no shelf in shower to put shampoos etc., even tho there is plenty of room to have these conveniences. Wifi very poor in our bedroom - there needs to have a booster. If we were to visit Shrewsbury again we would definitely stay at the Golden Cross. Great location on town centre.

Great atmosphere, good beer, nice but short menu, with some clever dishes that are not over "cheffy". Good value for money for the quality. Th bownerbis friendly and helpful and my waitress was attentive and charming.

Nice and cosy atmosphere. Service efficient. Starters excellent...tuna carpaccio and fried whitebait. Main course also excellent...haddock and chips, my partner being delighted with a second starter of mozzarella instead. However after asking for a sorbet and explaining that I wanted a dairy free dessert, I was very disappointed at being served an espresso gratina which tasted and looked as if it had been made with a very weak nescafe! After trying to express my very luke warm reaction and suggesting that a meringue topping might improve it I was presented with some scraps of meringue.... Either the kitchen chef doesn't approve of dairy free pudding customers or the management have no need for new business. So, my suggestion is that you visit the really exquisite location, have a starter and a main course and go to one of the other venues (there are plenty of them in this historic medieaval town) for your dessert and coffee.

Visited for a second time with the same group of friends we had eaten there with a year previously. Service was efficient and the food was good (in my opinion) and okay (in my husband's opinion). The dining room is small and as a table of 6 sharing the small room with 3 tables of 2 it was difficult to have a group conversation without noticing that all the other tables were listening in. The other diners probably felt our table was a little loud for them.

The Golden Cross lives up to its reputation for serving very good food at reasonable prices in very pleasant surroundings. Service is friendly and helpful, the wine list (like the menu) is short but more than sufficient in both quality and breadth.
Well presented plates of food, well seasoned and cooked speak of a kitchen that knows what is doing, but does not wish to be pretentious. Certainly, the starter and main courses are of a very high quality, though one or two of the desserts tend towards the mass catering end of the market.Overall, this is an excellent place to go for a good meal at reasonable prices.

Just passing with my fussy friend i thought i would treat him to a spot of lunch and as a parking space was directly opposite , it also seemed a nice place for a local salopian ales pint
£19.50 , 3 course lunch was displayed but i asked if he could condense and just do a main meal they charged £16.00 ( oooh a bit steep ) but as i like good food , why not .
ruddy lovely beef was spot on and the chicken in tarragon even lovelier , veg done to perfection .
Hats off a very nice meal had , and we will return if i wasn't to expensive on a main meal i would have given 5

The Golden Cross is our favourite restaurant in Shrewsbury. We only moved to the area recently, so haven't tried them all yet (!) but the Golden Cross has always been warm and friendly and the food first class

We found this place by accident as where we were intending to go was closed, such good luck, it was great.
The place was quite French in atmosphere and menu, the food was terrific, not badly priced and the staff attentive, without being fussy. Six of us ate together, but despite the number the kitchen coped perfectly and food was timely and perfectly cooked and presented

This was my first visit to this restaurant and it was recommended to me by a few people. Went here for. Nice romantic people. The setting it's quirky but welcoming and has elegance about it. The food was fantastic. I'm the sort of person who orders 2 starters as a main and main restaurants and staff find it difficult to get the right ones out at the right time, but couldn't fault it. My only issue was that I ordered a glass of wine and had to ask for it 3 times. But left at the end of the night feeling very positive and feeling like I will be back again in the don't so distance future.

Pubs are great, but we chose the Golden Cross for our final dinner in Shrewsbury. The decor is very attractive, and eating in an inn that has been serving since 1428 - wow! The owner/chef is cordial, and the menu has a few truly gourmet items. Desserts are great!

Living close to shrewsbury and being a nice night we decided to have a walk around the town and find somewhere to eat. we went into the golden cross by chance. what a lovely place. The restaurant area is not huge and the tables were quiet close together, but it did mean there was a nice atmosphere. The decor is eclectic and very nicely done , quiet calming. The menu although not vast there is something Im sure for all tastes. The wines were very good, lager and beers including local brewed ales, a good selection . The main courses were well cooked good temperatures and looked great on the plate. The sweet selection was good and we really enjoyed our meal from nibbles to the sweet. service was timely and very pleasant staff , could be the owner not really sure . the price of all this was £43.00, fantastic value for such an excellent place. we will recommend to anyone who will listen and will go again most probably on a regular basis.
