Press Release from Aspire Oxford:
Oxford homeless charities Aspire Oxford and Oxford Homeless Pathways have launched an appeal for donations to support homeless people in Oxford this Christmas.
Hundreds of local people in Oxfordshire will wake up without a home on Christmas Day. It’s vital that Aspire and Oxford Homeless Pathways can support homeless people into safe housing and secure employment so that they can leave homelessness behind.
Paul Roberts, Chief Operating Officer of Aspire and Lesley Dewhurst, Chief Executive of Oxford Homeless Pathways, said:
“Christmas is supposed to be a time of celebration and joy, but the reality is that for homeless people in our city it’s just another day when they will wake up on the streets or in unsafe accommodation. We’ve launched a joint Christmas Appeal to support homeless people in our city, not just to give them immediate shelter and hot food on Christmas Day but to offer them longer term skills, training and employment support so that they never have to be homeless again.
A gift of just £10 could transform Christmas for homeless people in our city, not just for this year but for future years too. Whether you make a donation, organise a church collection or do a cake sale with friends, every penny raised will support our vital work locally with homeless people in Oxford.”
Aspire Oxford trainee Clare Ellis became homeless with her two sons after fleeing domestic abuse:
“One of the hardest things about being homeless at Christmas was not having our most special possessions with us, like my two sons’ homemade Christmas decorations. I felt so much failure as a parent, shame for our situation and fear for our future.
But thanks to the support of charities like Aspire and Oxford Homeless Pathways, this year I’m looking forward to Christmas in my own home. I’m so excited that the Christmas decorations are already up! Please support Aspire and Oxford Homeless Pathways this Christmas on behalf of everyone in Oxfordshire who doesn’t have a safe, warm home.”
