One of Harborough’s independent retailers continues to gain a reputation at national level. Following on from their success at the ‘Drinks Retailing Awards’ in 2009, Duncan Murray Wines has been singled out for further recognition; this time by the Portuguese Wine Industry. Duncan Murray Wines have won ‘Independent Retailer of the Year’ at the Portuguese Wine Awards held on Thursday 11th February at the Portuguese Ambassador’s Residence in London.
The Portuguese Wine Awards seek to reward individuals and businesses who have made a significant contribution to promoting Portuguese wine in the UK. Categories include a ‘Major Award’ for large companies such as Laithwaites, a Restaurant Award and Independent Retailer Award. Duncan Murray Wines was nominated from amongst a national field of wine merchants in the Independent Retailer category and was down to the final two for Thursdays event where they were duly crowned the winners.
Duncan Murray Wine has been an enthusiastic supporter of Portuguese wine since it opened in 2001, but in the past two years the shop has run a Portuguese recipe competition and organised a ‘Discover Portugal’ Prize Draw in conjunction with Bates the Butchers, Emerson & Wests and Hobbs the Fishmongers.
Duncan and Megan Murray before attending the Awards Dinner commented: “It’s fantastic to be nominated. We came back to the shop after the New Year holiday and found out we needed to get our glad rags dry cleaned! We think Portuguese wines are great so it’s a buzz for us to promote them; there’s far more to Portuguese wine than Mateus Rosé!”
After the award had been given to them they couldn't wait to tell all their friends and customers.
"Well we bloody did it….yesterday evening we were entertained by The Portuguese Ambassador at The Embassy and we got the Independent Wine Merchant award as winner in the Portuguese Wine Awards 2010 and now have a lovely framed certificate and engraved decanter"
