Having a few hours to kill prior to checking in at our hotel the Moor Hall in Sutton Coldfield (always keen to give it a mention!) we drove to Lichfield to have a wander round. I knew it had a cathedral,.. they are always worth a visit as a way of killing time ..but I was not expecting what unfolded before my eyes as we approached it! When you think cathedrals you think..St. Pauls, Lincoln, Salisbury Notre Dame..even the Sagradia Famillia in Barcelona, all famous and much talked about, they stand tall dominating their surroundings but Lichfield is nestled comfortably amongst its neighbours and only reveals its glories when you get up close and personal!
Its carving and detail is as brilliant (if not more so) as any other I have seen ..both inside and out and I see and feel how inspired its builders were and how fantastic their attention to detail was considering they did not possess any power tools! Their blisters would have been ignored as they gazed upon their efforts! A 15 minute buzz round turned into 2 hours as I too was blown away by the magnificence of it... all worth a visit!!

This cathedral is magnificent and I loved the mosaic flooring the best. The architecture is much more detailed than any other cathedral that I have ever visited including the famous Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Although it is free entry and run by lovely helpful staff we just felt that we had to donate something to its up keep.

Magnificent Cathedral with loads of history. Time flew by as we wandered around admiring and learning of the history. There was a separate shop and a café which were great.

An absolutely stunning place. I'm a regular visitor to pray but the highlight will always be the Midnight Eucharist 2014. It was worth the long drive home Christmas morning.

Fantastic architecture .lovely lovely serene place to visit no charge for this beautiful cathedral but you are welcome to make donations .there was an art display in and outside not to my taste and not in keeping with this lovely place.modern has no place here please.

Beautiful building and some very unusual architecture. Thoroughly enjoyed walking around the Cathedral and learning its history. There was also an interesting art trail to follow around the Cathedral. The stained glass was beautiful and it was nice to just sit and reflect and absorb the atmosphere. There is no entrance fee but donations are gratefully accepted.

The Cathedral is a must visit , it is simply a amazing building it as got the wow factor . All the carving of figures of past kings on the front elevation of the Cathedral are something else . The inside is equally impressive . Plenty of guides available if you have got any Questions

Born and bred in Stafford, I had never been to Lichfield. Drove through it, many years ago when you could, and driven around it. Today my wife and I decided we would make the effort to visit, and I can honestly say, that for the largest City in the UK (by area), it was well worth the effort. We parked up on Debenhams multi storey car park and made our way to the Cathedral. I found it to be absolutely stunning. 800 years of history. The vaulted ceiling, the carving, the alter. Just wonderful, sun streaming through the stained glass windows. This place is a treasure trove steeped in history and still a wonderfully active centre of worship. They are currently spending over a million pounds having the place re-wired and new lighting installed so some of the "exhibits" had either been removed or covered over for protection. From the outside entrance you are in awe of the number of carved images covering the front, Saints to Kings. The shear craftsmanship of medieval sculptors is awesome. We shall return when the new lighting system has been completed. Over 800 years old and admission is free, though they, rightly, ask for donations. We went to Coventry Cathedral 2 weeks ago, entrance to was £6 unless you were there to pray. The contrast between these two cathedrals is unbelievable.... Post war architecture v medieval architecture. Both Cathedrals are stunning in their own histories. However I would like to see how the cement of Coventry will look in 800 years. I suspect, and hope Lichfield Cathedral will look resplendently in its 1600 year.

Historic and atmospheric. Check out St Chad's Head Chapel. Worth searching for. Interesting Chapter House and it has a pedilavium! Lots of great places to eat and stay close by. Try the cathedral refectory just across the road

What an amazing place !!! The staff (who are volunteers) were so friendly and knowledgeable & the cathedral itself is breathtaking. Fun trails for the kids to do whilst in there kept them interested & even had a cut little area with toys and thing to draw on. Amazing that this does not have a charge to get in to. We recently went to York were the Abbey there charges £10 to get in and you get nothing else for it. Comparing the two, Lichfield wins hands down.

A brilliant gothic style cathedral (the only one in england with three spires) there is a lot of information inside also if you would like to know more about it. It's also home to some lovely sculptures such as the lichfield angel.

There are volunteers on hand to welcome you to the Cathedral. It was our second visit the previous trip was over thirty years ago. The facade is wonderfully decorated with statues of saints and monarchs. Inside is tranquil, there was a choir rehearsing for the evening service. We stayed for the evensong service. If military history is your area of interest then you will find a lot of information about the Staffordshire Regiment. They were preparing for and art exhibition due to start next week.
There is an excellent cafe on site, good range of snacks and main meals at reasonable prices. Shop and cafe are in external buildings on the close.

A beautiful building, the West Front of the cathedral is particularly impressive as it is decorated with 113 statues! It is also reputed to be the only medieval English cathedral with three spires.

If you like Cathedrals Lichfield is worth a visit. The staff were excellent and eager to help visitors with understanding the history and artefacts on display including replicas of the Staffordshire Hoard

If you visit Lichfield, you HAVE to stop into this Cathedral. It was spectacular. Everything from the architecture and embellishments to the history was really interesting.

I have always loved this cathedral and it's three spires but feel that in the last few years it has become somewhat dated.They have done little over the years to offer more in the way of public interaction.On the plus side the history of the place speaks for itself and there is a very nice gift shop and tea room over the road.

What a wonderful building, I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to sing with other members of the Voluntary Cathedral Choirs Association - and what a sound 100 people can make in such a place!
It is something to consider how many people over many generations have sung in this place. A truly historic building.

Anyone interested in British history should visit this cathedral. A small bit of the Staffordshire Hoard is on display. Interesting civil war 'connection'
