All Cathedrals are really much the same, and this falls in to this bracket. Having wandered around a lot of them you get used to seeing amazing stuff that is very old, and that is all wrong really as each one is, like this, an amazing space when you consider how old they are.

Anyway, as there is no charge to get in your cannot go wrong (we always make a donation).

We were asked to make a voluntary donation as we walked in, which was a bit of a surprise as we had read that visiting was free and we would have donated anyway. Very friendly staff, and I liked all the kneelers embroidered by individual Deanery people. The Nave was being decorated for Palm Sunday with huge Palm branches at the end of some of the pews. We visited again for the Palm Sunday service the following day. It started with a procession from Speaker's Corner on Dam Street with clergy and congregation following afterwards. The great West Door was opened to allow entry of all the people (minus the donkey) and the cathedral service began. A memorable experience.

A fantastic display of lights on the walls of the Cathedral followed by a tour of the trees inside the Cathedral. Friendly staff and volunteers. The display was free and some refreshments were available to buy (hot and cold drinks and cakes). Well worth a visit just remember to book your tickets in advance.

We are so lucky living in Lichfield to have this beautiful cathedral.
I visit many times, I wanted to pray for my darling husband and reflect.
Such an emotional time for me, but I felt all the better for going.

We visited Lichfield to do a spot of Christmas shopping and it was a busy Saturday so we were looking for somewhere to get a bit of respite from the crowds. We saw this imposing building from down a side street and thought we'd take a look round as we always enjoying visiting the cathedrals of new cities.
The actual front of the cathedral is stunning, architecturally with three gothic spires. Inside is just as magnificent and totally peaceful. You can't help yourself but to get lost in awe as you amble quietly around. Entrance is free but when you start to read the information on how much it costs to keep the building open just on a single day it makes you immediately want to donate to keep such a gorgeous building open and intact.
Definitely worth a visit if you are in Lichfield!

Commanding a prominent location in the City this magnificent cathedral is human scale.

Superb carvings and statues

Very welcoming internally with wondrous acoustics.

A great setting around the square with the period buildings surrounding it. An architectural gem well worth the visit.

It is striking enough from the outside but take a close look around at the interior, it has beautiful architecture all around, with incredibly crafted stonework and carpentry making this a stunningly beautiful cathedral which ever angle you look at it from. It also has a warm welcoming feel to it.

One of the most beautiful Cathedrals we have visited. They were not in your face for entrance money as soon as you got through the door. It was a pleasure to leave a donation. We saw the Lichfield Angel and other treasures. The guides are very knowledgeable and helpful. You can visit the little shop and buy something to remember your visit. Not to be missed.

We really enjoyed our visit to the Cathedral in Lichfield and recommend it to anyone visiting the area. It is a magnificent building, with fine architecture and a wealth of historic interest. It is set in a wonderful Cathedral Close which has fascinating historic buildings. The Cathedral itself contains carvings, a superb medieval wall painting, a sculpture of the 'Lichfield Angel', the shrine of St Chad, amazing stained glass windows and much more. Allow plenty of time to take it all in, either guided by a knowledgeable staff member of self-guided. We were warmly greeted and the whole atmosphere was welcoming and tranquil. We look forward very much to a return visit.

There are lots of reviews here, on TripAdvisor, of Lichfield Cathedral. All I would say is that it is absolutely splendid.
GETTING THERE.
ON FOOT.
Once in the city there large maps and helpful pedestrian signposts (brown.).
From the Market Sq. you can see the target. Go either to the left, on to Bird St, then Beacon St., with Minster Pool on your right. Next turn to the right leads to The Close, facing the west front, the picture postcard view. Alternatively to the right from the Market, up picturesque Dam St. into the Close this way. Take your pick.
BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT.
The main line Trent Valley station is well over a mile from the city centre. You can go in by train(the other line), by bus or taxi. The City station and the main bus station are opposite each other, a short walk from the Market
BY CAR.
You can't park in the Close. I'm sure you will have a map or the like indicating parking. Note the inner city is pedestrianised, with narrow allies accessible only by foot, dead ends, unexpected one-way streets, annoying restricted turns, lots of wandering pedestrians and surprisingly, a lot of traffic! Unless you have a disabled badge, are making a delivery, or have a permit, don't think about it.
The nearest car park is a little further up Beacon St. on the Left at a derelict hotel. I have never used this, so can tell you no more. Beyond this, left, Shaw La. has a small CP, often full, as it serves Beacon Park; good play area for kids!
The Big CP to the south of Minster Pool (known as Woolworth's CP) has excellent toilets and either route to the Cathedral is obvious. But it is curiously hard to find, at busy times can be full with a dozen cars cruising round, waiting to pounce on a vacated space.
All the other CPs are within reasonable walking distance, but can also be busy. Keep trying. A 'private' CP, probably not on your map, is on Cross Keys, left, just beyond the council CP on the right. 40yds from Dam St. £1 3hours, £2 all day. The catch? it is a demolition site! It is rough but safe. I regularly use it.
REFRESHMENTS.
There are a multitude of assorted watering holes, to suit all tastes and pockets, many on TripAdvisor. There are none I would advise to avoid.
APPOLOGY.
The details at the end of this review in many case should be Not Applicable, but there is no box to tick, so read on with this in mind.
AND:-
Enjoy the city and its wonderful cathedral. Dave.

We live in Lichfield and really appreciate our cathedral. It is a wonderful old building and unlike lot of other cathedrals we have visited there is no hard sell to make it difficult to enter without making a substantial 'voluntary donation'. Having said that cathedrals need a lot of upkeep so if you enjoy your visit it would be good to make a donation on the way out.

The tone of the cathedral is High Anglican with all the pomp and ceremony that implies but the cathedral staff are welcoming and keen to tell you what they know about the history of the building.

The cathedral hosts lots of non church events including exhibitions, concerts and a wonderful free light show projected on the front of the building in the run up to Christmas.

With no religious inclinations whatsoever, I visited the Cathedral with my wife and Mother in Law from overseas with a somewhat sceptical approach as to what to expect. When you arrive in the "square" - the "presence" of the Cathedral is immediate and impressive - the architecture from the outside of the building is breathtaking and just beautiful... and that's before we even went in.
In younger years I would have dismissed such a visit immediately - but as I had planned to leave them inside and come back later, I couldn't help but tag along - so impressed was I by the building.
Inside is even more breathtaking - and it is clearly a popular place to visit as there were many people ambling around and just taking it all in.
It's weird (or maybe it's just me!) but when visiting places like this, I feel quite "humbled" - the vastness of the building and the serenity and peacefulness inside are rare experiences in this day and age and it genuinely had a calming effect on me and an hour had passed easily before we even realised.
If you are in the area and want to be impressed - go visit the Cathedral. I can guarantee you will be.

It's one of the most beautiful cathedrals with more than 1300 years old very well maintained entry is free but they ask for a donation because they say to keep up the cathedral running they need 3 pounds per hour and all the money almost will be invested in this beautiful artwork cathedral
