Fathers Day is nearly upon us and what a better way to say thank you than by dedicating one day to him this year, after all without him you wouldn’t be here would you?   This is the perfect time of the year to show our dads just how much we appreciate everything they do for us and unlike all the other special dates this one is slightly easier as dads don’t really expect much. You needn’t spend ridiculous amounts to show your dad you care. Simple yet thoughtful gifts will show you’ve made the effort and know exactly what he likes. Whatever it is that you decide to get your dad this Father’s Day 2012, be sure that he has the best possible day!

Being ‘Dad’ is a role packed full of challenges, excitement, sadness, fun, frustrations and more.

The idea of a special day to honour fathers and celebrate fatherhood was introduced from the United States. There, a woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American Mother's Day celebrations to plan a day to honour fathers. Father's Day has been celebrated in June since 1910 in the USA. The celebrations in the United Kingdom are thought to have been inspired by the American custom of Father's Day. This is in contrast to Mother's Day, which has a very different history in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Today’s fathers have started to take on roles vastly different from fathers of previous generations. 30 or 40 years ago it may have been taken for granted that the father was the breadwinner and head of the family. These days there's far less rigid expectations of a dad's responsibilities - couples often work together, both in and outside the home, and share responsibilities for day-to-day parenting issues. But even in the more traditional roles, the introduction of paternity leave and flexible work entitlements has provided greater opportunities for working dads to enjoy family time.

Also, Fathers Day doesn’t have to be just for biological fathers as there could be a special step dad or another person in your life who has been more of a father figure then your actual one.  Don’t be scared or afraid to say thank you as they are just as special and would be overwhelmed to know how you feel about them.  Just remember the choice is yours, not anyone else’s!

Do make sure you spoil your Dad - it is only once every year and you know he's worth it!

So... don't forget, Father's Day this year is Sunday (as always!), 17th June 2012
