A year on from a merger with Jersey's leading civil and structural engineering firm T & G Limited, McCathie Associates Limited (MAL) continues to go from strength to strength.

They are now part of the largest single-discipline engineering consultancy in the Channel Islands and, together with their Jersey partners T & G and building surveyors MDW Limited, they make up the T & G Group.

The 19-strong team boasts five Chartered Engineers (three of whom are SER certified) as well as extensive knowledge and expertise in all aspects of structural and civil engineering consultancy and building surveying across a multitude of different sectors.

Combined, the experience, skills and resources of the T & G Group can deal with pretty much any civil and structural design challenge that can be faced in the Channel Islands whilst still remaining a manageable size for its constituent markets.

The last 12 months have also seen a number of other changes, including the move to new premises at Caslon Court in Pitronnerie Road and a restructuring of the management team across the two islands.

T & G Group Chairman Ian Bashforth, Managing Director of McCathie Associates, has specific responsibility for developing potential new markets, and is supported by Director Patricia Newell Maher, who is responsible for overseeing the continued expansion of the Guernsey office and also Director Sara Devitt who is responsible for technical excellence.

An experienced Chartered Engineer, Patricia joined the company in September 2010 and, prior to her move to Guernsey, had been running NME Consultants, a small engineering consultancy based in Galway.  She holds a degree in structural engineering from Trinity College, Dublin and spent the early part of her career in the Cork Office of Fehily Timoney & Company, one of the leading Irish-owned independent consultants, where she was Project Engineer and Manager on a number of medium to large scale projects.

Commenting on developments, T & G Group Chairman Ian Bashforth said the merger between T & G and MAL had been the first of a number of planned strategic opportunities designed to increase market potential and add value to the business offering;

"We are already seeing the benefits of the merger and there is increasing realisation within the marketplace of the skills and resources we have at our disposal and a recognition that we are now able to handle bigger and more complex projects than we would have managed in the past".  Ian Bashforth

Director Patricia Newell Maher has recently been elected as chair of the Guernsey branch of CIGPE (Channel Islands Group of Professional Engineers), a multi-disciplinary grouping of professional engineering institutions in the Channel Islands.

Patricia said that one of the priorities for the Guernsey branch in 2012 would be to improve links with secondary schools and raise awareness of careers opportunities for prospective engineers.

"We're also looking to hold a series of local lectures and site visits which will showcase the highly qualified and skilled engineers and professionals we have on the island and allow others to benefit from their wealth of knowledge and international experience".  Patricia Maher

CIGPE want to encourage anyone who may be interested in presenting a lecture or hosting a site visit to contact them.  Lectures already planned for 2012 are:

The Guernsey Airport 2040 Lecture on 25th January at the OGH.
This will be presented by Gerry Prickett, Director of Civil Engineering and Project Manager for TPS Consult.

Icelandic Volcanoes Lecture on 22nd February at the OGH.
This will be presented by Dr. Thorvaldur Thordarson.
