Guernsey's Future Stars
8th November 2011

Last Saturday saw the launch of Future Stars - a new basketball development initiative aimed at girls and boys aged 6-16 to promote the game of basketball in Guernsey and encourage active participation in team sports with the associated benefits including teamwork, discipline, social skills, self expression and confidence.

The first session was held on Saturday 5th November at St. Sampson’s High School, and will run for a further 24 weeks every Saturday afternoon.  Over 90 people signed up at the first session but there is still room for more, especially for School years 10-11.

Established by two local coaches (UKCC Level 2 Qualified) with support of the Guernsey Basketball Association (GBA), ‘Future Stars’, provides high quality basketball coaching and playing opportunities for young people in a fun, structured and safe environment.

The aim is for participants to train in 5 different age groups:

Rookies - School year 1 from 1-2pm
Freshman - School years 2-3 from 1-2pm
Sophomore - School years 4-6 from 2-3pm
Junior - School years 7-9 from 3-4pm
Senior - School years 10-11 *4-5pm

*At present the Seniors have joined with the Juniors from 3-4pm until they gain more recruits.

The cost for this fantastic programme is just £39.50 (£1.58 per session) which covers issued kit (to keep), coaching delivery, league participation and administration costs.

While partnered with the GBA, the ‘Future Stars’ Programme is an independent initiative operated by its founding coaches whose aim is to offer an introduction and sustained long term development plan for young people.

They will be teaching the skills, rules and culture of the game as well as offering players a solid foundation for entry into Guernsey Basketball Association operated leagues and beyond, using sport to develop life skills which will serve the wider community.

All information about how to sign up is available in the Future Stars Application Form.

These forms are also available to collect from the Guernsey Sports Commission at The Coach House (outside Beau Sejour Leisure Centre).
