Improve Air Quality & Reduce Energy Usage
Plants actively improve indoor air quality. By filtering out toxins, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, they create a healthier workspace. They also release humidity into the air, helping to regulate temperature, which can reduce heating and cooling costs. Indeed, a NASA study identified 50 species of houseplants that enhance air quality, including spider plants, snake plants and peace lilies.
Reduce Noise & Enhance Focus
Workplaces are often bustling with noise and activity, making it hard to concentrate. Plants naturally absorb and deflect sound, helping to reduce background noise in open-plan offices. Strategically placing greenery can define spaces, minimise distractions and improve focus, creating a more harmonious and productive environment.
Boost Mood & Productivity
The Cardiff University’s School of Psychology found that introducing
plants to a workspace can increase productivity by as much as 15%. So the evidence confirms that teams perform better when surrounded by greenery, experiencing reduced stress, enhanced memory and improved mood. Whilst the decorative value of healthy plants makes a space more welcoming for both employees and visitors, equally the nearly-dead plant in the corner can have the opposite effect, so it's important to look after your office plants with regular TLC.
Create a Green Identity
Sustainability has become an important value for modern businesses, and rightly so. Studies show that companies that prioritise environmental awareness are more attractive to top talent. Creating green spaces - both indoors and outdoors - demonstrates a commitment to eco-friendly practices.
Design a Healthier Office
Work-related stress can lead to regular absences and reduced focus. Certain plants such as lavender are known for their calming properties, reducing anxiety while adding a pleasant scent and splash of colour. If your workplace has access to an outside space, why not add some planters and hanging baskets, and encourage employees who enjoy working in an outdoor green space to spend time there? I expect you'll discover a productivity boost from those grateful staff.
Grow Your Own
Another way of using your office's outdoor space is to start a small vegetable or herb garden. Raised beds or window boxes filled with fresh herbs can be a fun way to encourage employees to connect with nature. You could even host a friendly competition - who can grow the hottest chili pepper?
Bring Nature into Your Workplace
By incorporating plants into your office design, you can create a workspace that fosters health, happiness and productivity. Whether through a simple desk plant, a green privacy wall or an outdoor garden, the benefits of bringing nature to the workplace are clear. Start small and watch your workplace flourish.
