Why is The Bishop's Meadow so important to the people of Farnham?

Surrounded by businesses, housing estates and the busy Farnham bypass, Bishop's Meadow is a surprisingly peaceful area BUT it too has been threatened with potential building development. Thankfully Farnham Herald newspaper owner, Sir Ray Tindle, has purchased the land and provided the people of Farnham with the opportunity to raise £200,000 (the amount he bought it for) within two years, to buy it back from him. This instigated the creation of the Bishop's Meadow Trust, its aim to acquire, manage and maintain this historic natural space for the benefit of Farnham inhabitants and visitors.

Kidsfest was brilliant – a weekend festival organised by kids for kids, with the purpose of raising funds for The Bishop's Meadow Trust. We had such a lovely time enjoying the music, crafts and zany activities. My girls spent ages in the dressing up tent, trying on clothes, having their nails and faces painted, being treated like princesses! Our favourites included The Rock Pop foundation, obstacle course and the doughnut eating competition. We were completely transfixed watching the Baked Bean Catapult and Custard Slide! Nobody could possibly have bypassed the Thai food with out being tempted - delicious. It was great to see BBC star Daniel Roche from 'Outnumbered'  who seemed to be a really down to earth and cool kid, joining in the fun and petting the animals along with the rest of the children. All the volunteers deserve a pat on the back, their generosity and enthusiasm created a completely relaxed and safe environment, which was lots of fun. I was amazed at how many businesses and organisations supported the event and it was great to see how Farnham's community came together to make it a success.

The Bishop's Meadow Trust hold regular events to support its fund raising and its latest is a photographic competition. They are looking for images depicting the Bishop's Meadow; perhaps something that captures the spirit and community nature of the place, or just portrays its beauty. The Trust are hoping to create some greetings cards and a photo book, and your image might just be what we’re looking for! Closing date for entries is 31 October 2011. Many volunteers, organisations and local businesses in Farnham have already shown their support for the endangered meadow.

Best of Farnham Members, The Plough, one of Farnham's friendliest pubs, supports a number of community schemes and charities, including the Bishop's Meadow Trust. The last Thursday of every month is Supper Night, providing a delicious home cooked meal for ONLY £5.00. Proceeds from these evenings are donated to the Trust.
