Stitching isn't just for women
If you have been a recent viewer of BBC2's The Great British Sewing Bee, you will know that the  contestants include men from a wide range of working backgrounds and they are doing really well! The opinion of sewing as being something men wouldn’t do really is outdated and the male contestants on the BBC show prove it.
Presented by the likeable Claudia Winkleman, The Great British Sewing Bee provides amateur sewers with three challenges, to make or alter an item of clothing under intense time pressure. Their creations are then judged by Savile Row's handsome Patrick Grant and sewing expert May Martin, until one of them is crowned Britain's best amateur sewer.
If you're a keen dressmaker you are probably already hooked on the programme and even if you are a little rusty at needlework, many of you will have been inspired to dust down your sewing machine and buy pretty fabric.
The Walkaway Dress
Week three of the series transported us back to the 1950s and contestants were challenged to get to grips with yesteryear sewing machines and one of the most popular garments of the era, the Walkaway dress. Fifties housewives got the pattern in the morning and could ‘walk away’ in the dress by lunchtime – or so the story goes! Watch how the Sewing Bee contestants tackled the dress challenge
Freelance Soft Furnishing knew you would love to have a go at this super-fast creation and we now have in stock the Butterick Retro B4790 Walkaway dress. You can also browse our wide range of Butterick, McCall and Vogue patterns and books, as well as stunning dress fabrics.
Upcycling, imagination and individual style are key to the Sewing Bee's success. We have seen how it really is possible to turn a pair of curtains or a pillowcase into something wearable and that the world is your oyster when you create a child’s fancy dress costume from scratch. So if your creative juices are flowing but your old pillowcases are threadbare and the curtains have been used for dust sheets, pop into Freelance. We have everything from pretty cotton prints to fur and organza, as well as some stunning curtain material!
New In Stock
Pale blue snowflake organza. Perfect for those Frozen fans!
If you haven't yet caught up with The Great British Sewing Bee it's on BBC Two on Thursday night from 8pm until 9pm – We recommend it!
