Phyllis Tuckwell Appeals for Shop Volunteers

The Hospice Care charity has a total of 20 shops in various locations across West Surrey and North East Hampshire, and all are in need of extra hands. As the charity offers free collection for those who are donating large items, such as furniture, and a delivery service for those buying these items, it is also looking for more volunteer van drivers as well.

Phyllis Tuckwell’s shop-based volunteers help with sorting the donations which have been made and preparing them for sale, as well as helping customers, using the tills, listing items on Ebay and other generic retail tasks. Volunteer van drivers and drivers’ mates collect larger donated items from across the charity’s catchment area of West Surrey and North-East Hampshire and take them to their shops, or take them from the shops to deliver to customers who are unable to collect the items themselves.

Like many charities, Phyllis Tuckwell relies heavily on its volunteers, who help in a wide variety of roles across the organisation. Their support helps the charity provide the supportive and end of life care which it gives to local patients and families living with a terminal illness, such as cancer. Every day it supports over 250 patients, relatives and carers, but as the NHS/Government only covers 20% of its costs, it has to raise over £20,000 a day to be able to do this. Its 20 shops help enormously in generating this money, and the volunteers who help there are integral to this success.

Volunteering is not only beneficial for Phyllis Tuckwell – as well as the feel-good factor which comes from doing their bit for a good cause, those who help others also often find that they are less stressed than their counterparts, and experience higher levels of life satisfaction and well-being. Another reason to consider becoming a volunteer!

So if you have some time which you can spare, please consider volunteering for Phyllis Tuckwell, and help out this vital local charity at the same time as boosting your own well-being!
