More Blood Donors Are Needed In Surrey

Blood donations are used by hospitals in the treatment of patients for life-saving and life-enhancing operations, but only 4% of the UK population are blood donors.

Appeals have gone out through out Surrey and Hampshire as O negative and B negative blood stocks are very low and the NHS Blood and Transplant Authority has created extra blood giving sessions in Farnham and throughout the country to help increase levels. In addition to this, 200,000 new donors are needed every year to replace those who can no longer give blood - the demand for blood never stops.

Donating blood is quick, simple and safe

  • On arrival you will be asked to complete a Donor Health Check questionnaire and have the opportunity to chat confidentially with a nurse.
  • A tiny drop of blood is taken from your fingertip to check haemoglobin levels and to make sure that giving blood won't make you anaemic.
  • If all is well, you will donate about 470ml of blood which is quickly replaced by your body.
  • You will then need a short rest and will be treated to some refreshments.
  • Remember to have something to eat and drink before you give blood

Most donors are able to give blood three times a year and for less than an hour of your time, you could help save someone’s life.

Regular blood donar sessions are held at Farnham Maltings, click here for details of dates and times.  Or to find out more about becoming a blood donor visit www.blood.co.uk  or call 0300 123 23 23.
