Everything Farnham motorists need to know about car tax changes

Starting from Wednesday 1st October a vehicle will no longer have to display a paper tax disc in its windscreen as the system is moving online. Your car will though still need to be taxed! Other changes include the option to pay by monthly direct debit and it will no longer be possible to transfer this from sellers to buyers when cars change hands.

What shall I do with my old tax disc?

After the changeover date, it can simply be removed from the vehicle and destroyed. You will receive a reminder from the DVLA to renew your tax when it runs out.

How do I tax my car in the future ?

You have a choice of options for renewing car tax:

  • Apply online at gov.uk/tax-disc
  • Apply over the phone, call 0300 123 4321
  • Apply at your local Farnham post office

Paying vehicle tax by Direct Debit

Monthly instalments via Direct Debit will be offered as an additional way to pay for vehicle tax from 1 October 2014 (5 October if setting up at a Post Office) But this is only available for customers who need to tax their vehicle from 1 November 2014. This option also means that tax is automatically renewed, providing that the car has a valid MOT certificate.

Will the police know if my car is taxed?

Of course! The DVLA has a digital record of payments and number-plate recognition cameras are used to track vehicles and identify those that aren’t taxed. You can check the tax status of any vehicle online

I want to sell my car

These new changes will mean that car tax is no longer transferable. If you sell a vehicle after 1 October you will receive a refund for any full remaining months left on the vehicle tax once you have informed the DVLA.
