Adventures in Farnham – spinning a yarn

February is the month when Farnham goes a bit bonkers and public places such as the bandstand in Gostrey Meadow go all soft and cuddly and road signs and lamp posts are transformed from drab grey to rainbow stripes overnight. For February in Farnham is the month of Unravel!

Launched as a one day event in 2009 Unravel has now grown to a three day festival and celebration of all things knitted, crocheted, spun (not salad mind you …) woven and felted. The event takes place at the Farnham Maltings but clandestine yarn storming* activities spread around the town on the same weekend.

As well as to national and international visitors, Unravel invitations are also extended to a few local sheep who can be seen in all their woolliness calmly munching grass outside the Maltings. One year a rather high-spirited ewe fled her pen early in the morning and made a dash for the Farnham by-pass. She was quickly and safely apprehended – relief all round – but had she turned left rather than right she would have been caught on her way to the Shepherd and Flock roundabout. If only …….!

There is not enough space to talk more about Unravel on this little Post except to say that it is a great start to what promises to be another fabulous year for ‘Farnham -The Town of Craft’.
