Adventures in Farnham – On the rails

For years my husband claimed that I made the worse cup of coffee in the world, complaining that I must drain the water first through an old dishcloth – or worse - before serving. By a narrow margin of one vote I relinquished my role of head barista handing over the duty to He Who Moaned Too Much and the household was a better place as a result.

So, bearing in mind the above, please give a thought to the thirsty of Farnham when I don my pinny and help behind the tea and cake stand this month at Music in the Meadow. For yes, it is that time of year in Farnham when, as far as activities and events go, we suffer an embarrassment of riches. There is an incredible amount to do, see and become involved in around the area and it is difficult, or in fact, nigh impossible to squeeze everything in. There are carnivals, summer fairs, music concerts, art studios to visit, open air theatres, picnics in the park and so the list goes on.

But it looks like activities are also hotting up outside the summer months. As I type submissions are being considered from artists who have responded to a competition to design a new sign for Farnham. From October onwards visitors will be welcomed as they near the town by road signs declaring ‘Farnham: A Craft Town’. Recognition has been granted to the great richness and variety of crafts being produced and enjoyed here and the town has gained the status of the home of England’s contemporary craft scene.

Perhaps soon we may be besieged with visitors from London, tired of life there and so searching for something better here in Farnham….. If that is the case then I hope that they will hop on the train and pop in to somewhere like The Mulberry, that not only serves a great burger (He Who Stopped Moaning While Eating One, can vouch for that, as can I) but is also a stone’s throw away from the station, plus can offer accommodation for those too tired from being a tourist to catch the last train home.
