A Personal Invite to Normandy D-Day Celebrations

We have just celebrated the 70th anniversary of D-Day 2014. I've been unwell for a few days so I have not been working. This has left me bored. But watching the TV clip today showing the bravery of the allied troops fighting their way up Sword beach in Normandy, has made me think back to 1996 and the liberation celebrations I experienced in Reffuvielle, my little adopted village I go to in Normandy.

It was a hot sunny day in that Summer of 1996 when I returned to my caravan to find a little half folded piece of card with Liberte printed on the front cover, set in a basic background of blue and red. Inside it was hand written in English by Rene Marie my old friend the mayor. It was inviting me and my girlfriend to a medal ceremony and the local village celebrations of their Day of Liberte. It was in two weeks and this meant I would still be in France and able to attend.

When I opened the caravan door on that Sunday morning it was bright and sunny, perfect conditions for a celebration. I knew Rene and the other organisers would be pleased as it would make their day easier and the occasion would not be spoilt. Living in a field is never easy, but it seemed strange putting on a tie and getting dressed as if I was about to go to work at an office. Here I am putting on a white collar and tie and my girlfriend is putting on a nice formal dress. All the while being surrounded by green fields, cows and horses.
