Year 3 students at The Maynard School, in the aptly named Denmark Road, Exeter, will be invaded by a marauding band of Vikings on Wednesday 2 May in an exciting day where historical battles from years gone by will be re-enacted.
Axe-wielding Viking leader Guthrum will be played by Greg Martin, a long-standing Australian Viking re-enactor, who has fought many a bloody battle with the Saxons. Viking Greg will give the Maynard girls warrior names, show them runic stones and help them to make their own shields and swords (out of cardboard, of course!). Greg will also research famous Viking battles with the students such as the Battle of Pinhoe.
Year 3 teacher Mrs Claire Rowe said: ‘The girls have been studying the Vikings as a subject and it will be very useful for them to see some in the flesh! It’s a great opportunity for them to experience a Viking battle first-hand and will really put some life into the subject.’
