With bagpipes, haggis and whisky at the ready, the Exeter and District Caledonian Society celebrated St Andrew’s Day with an evening at Exeter Golf and Country Club.
The Exeter and District Caledonian Society was established in 1891, when 10 Scottish men met in the Globe Hotel in Cathedral Yard, Exeter and proposed the formation of an organisation to support impoverished Scots living locally. They also wanted to promote Scotland and its culture, keeping their heritage alive whilst living away from their homeland. Today, members of the Caledonian Society in Exeter meet socially to celebrate Scottish culture, music and dancing.
The Caledonian Society has celebrated St Andrew’s Day at Exeter Golf and Country Club for the past 10 years. This year, 65 members attended the event and enjoyed a traditional Scottish banquet of Scotch Broth, haggis, neeps and tatties. The event adhered to tradition with the haggis being presented to the guests by the chef, to the sound of bagpipes played by a Scottish piper.
Event organiser and member of the Caledonian Society, Jim Dowie said, “We have been celebrating St Andrew’s Day at Exeter Golf and Country Club for 10 years now and this year was certainly the best ever. The event from start to finish was superb. The food was the most delicious it has ever been – and it was wonderful to see the chef, who happens to be Scottish, parade the haggis to the tune of our bagpipe player!”
