Inspired by positive responses to other month-long charity campaigns – Movember and Stoptober, BBXUK launched their take on a campaign to help the charities in the trading community for the month of September – Sparetember – bank of spare capacity – get it?!

This is the month we ask our partners to dig a bit deeper and donate their spare capacity whether it be goods or services and the funds generated get donated to our charities to enable them to carry on with their good work.

At BBX Devon, we personally support two charities – The Shark Trust based in Plymouth and the YMCA Exeter.

The Shark Trust is quite simply passionate about saving our sharks, this is a global problem and requires a global solution but bit by bit this fantastic charity strives to promote awareness of these wonderful but fearful creatures and to help protect all the species.

They are constantly active, and this month alone have supporters taking part in the “Thames Bridges Trek” on the 7th; the Scottish half marathon on the 22nd; on the 14th will see them at the Plymouth Seafood Festival promoting their work on sustainable fishing management.  They actively encourage to engage with people of all ages, have great corporate partnership opportunities and to get the youngsters involved promote their “Great egg case hunt” where the children can scour the beaches to find shark egg cases that wash up on the shore.

If you want to get more involved with this charity check out their website www.sharktrust.org

The YMCA Exeter is one of the oldest YMCA’s in the world.  Inspired by their Christian values has helped sustain this invaluable resource for young people who provide supported accommodation for 18 – 29-year olds, help empower young people to develop their full potential in body, mind and spirit.

With an extremely clear vision and sticking with their mission, they operate and act by their 5-strong distinctive values which are characterised through their faith, courage, excellence, service and integrity.

Their core support is in youth services; the support of ex-offenders; supported accommodation and mental health.  All hot and important topics that will help shape the lives of young people to help move them forward in this complicated world.

Of course, funds are always needed to keep this much needed support afloat and 2019 has seen some great awards that have come their way – a National Lottery grant towards their wellbeing project.  A fantastic afternoon “Cream Tea” when they opened their doors to show off their work.  Winners of a bid from Nationwide for housing. Taking part in the “Sleep Easy” week supported by the local Knight Frank office and raising a whopping £14,000.  Also this year, they received a grant from the Allchurches Trust for a much-needed employment programme.
