In September visitors can enjoy a wide range of exhibitions and events at Exeterâs award-winning museum. A day of events on Saturday 7 September will give visitors with an interest in art, science and morality the chance to meet the artist and learn more about the ethical issues addressed the exhibition Wasted. A discussion between an artist and a cultural geographer will throw more light on courtyard video installation of Exeter views: This Cityâs Centre. Other exhibitions include the abstract art of Gillian Ayres, Dartmoor scenes by the Widgerys and local scenes by renowned artists. The work of a local art group chosen by readers of the Express & Echo will also go on display. TV naturalist, Nick Baker, will be talking about skulls, Dr Anthony Kelly on the art boom during the Second World War, and Orlando Rutter on Dartmoor. Adult courses on pattern design and on drawing and Carousel art courses for families with young children start this month. Thereâs also a chance to handle clothing from the World Cultures collection, meet the RSPB and enjoy circus fun in the garden amphitheatre. New Exhibition Express & Echo Local Art Show 2013 24 September to 16 October Gallery 20 An exhibition showcasing the work of one local art society chosen by readers of the Express and Echo newspaper. Rosie Denham, Exeterâs Lead Councillor for Economy and Culture, said âThis yearâs Local Art Show at RAMM promises to be a great show. There is just so much talent in the Exeter area. Eight excellent entries have been narrowed down to four for Express & Echo readers to vote on and it will be a difficult choice. I thank all who have contributed and wish the four shortlisted groups the best of luck.â The four shortlisted groups were Opus Mosaic Artists Group; Hive; Double Elephant Print Workshop; and Magic Carpet. They were featured in the Express & Echo throughout August and readers invited to vote for their favourite. Gallery conversation: Wasted or Not? Stem Cell Research in the Spotlight Saturday 7 September, 2 to 4pm, £4.50 (£3) Gallery 20 A chance to question leading experts about stem cell research. The panel includes Jean Harrington of Kings College, London and Professor Sara Rankin of Imperial College, London, co-creator of the exhibition. The conversation will be chaired by John Bryant, Emeritus Professor at the University of Exeter, and is supported by Exeter Café Scientifique. Sketching from the collections, participants will develop ideas through colour and form and build a portfolio of patterns and textiles designs from which to create new and exciting surfaces. RSPB experts will be on hand to answer your questions on the collections and the work of the RSPB. Free guided wildlife tours through RAMM start in the In Find Feather gallery at 11am and 2pm. The tours are a 20 to 30 minute walk around the museum discovering the fantastic wildlife on display and how the RSPB is helping to protect it. Discover underwater wonders around Devon's shores, learn how bees are saving the UK millions of pounds a year, find out which piece of clothing inspired the RSPB's origins and how everything from tigers to sparrows are being protected by local conservationists. Bone Head: A Heads up on the Most Fascinating Bones in the Body Saturday 14 September, 2pm, £10 (£7.50) Gallery 20 Join RAMM Patron Nick Baker for an informative, intimate, sometimes surreal and irreverent look into the world of skulls and a skull collector. Nick has been a bone collector all his life, fascinated in particular with the many aspects of the skull. In this talk he gets down to the bare bones of the most important collection of bones in the body; on one hand the perfect example of form and function and on the other, a thing of great sculptural beauty. He will explore the origins, purpose and mechanics of these bones and how they develop, and delve into the realm of symbolism and imagery. Heritage Open Day at St Nicholas Priory Saturday 14 September, 10am to 5pm, free, drop-in Originally part of Exeterâs first medieval monastery, this Grade 1 listed building is presented as a richly furnished Tudor home. Admission is free this Saturday for Heritage Open Days. Circus Sunday Sunday 22 September, 11am to 4pm, free, drop in. RAMM Garden Outdoor circus entertainment for all the family. Part of Unexpected, a new city festival taking performance and art out of venues and into unexpected locations. Unexpected runs from 15 to 22 September and culminates in Circus Sunday. www.exeter.gov.uk/unexpected Lunchtime lecture: An Introduction to Dartmoor National Park Wednesday 25 September, 1 to 2pm, £4.50 (£3) RAMM Meeting Room A Orlando Rutter, Senior Learning & Outreach Officer at Dartmoor National Park, will explore some of the natural and human influences that have shaped the landscape which provides inspiration for writers and artists. He will also describe some of the work of Dartmoor National Park Authority. Friends evening lecture Wartime Renaissance: Art in Britain 1939-45 Thursday 26 September, 6.30pm, £5 Gallery 20 Dr Anthony Kelly will explain that, unexpectedly, art prospered in Britain during the Second World War. Kenneth Clarkâs âofficialâ war art was exhibited in the National Gallery with a classical âpainting of the monthâ. His Recording Britain displayed tranquil landscapes, some in Devon. Large audiences also saw many independent exhibitions nationwide, providing inspiration in the dark days of war.
