The experienced Australian international led from the front at a packed Sandy Park as he helped the Chiefs to record their first major silverware in 143 years as they overcame Premiership rivals Northampton Saints 15-8.

Having led 8-3 at the break thanks to a Chris Whitehead try and a penalty from fly-half Henry Slade, Mumm helped to extend Exeter’s advantage during the second period when he put the finishing touches to a scintillating move from Rob Baxter’s side.

His converted score helped to push the Chiefs two scores clear of the Saints, who themselves countered with a late Samu Manoa try.

With the trophy firmly clasped in his possession at the final whistle, a delighted Mumm not only praised the efforts of the Chiefs squad, but also the club’s fan-base who helped to roar them to success on their own turf.

“This was our first opportunity to get silverware out of the top flight and thankfully we’ve managed to do it,” said Mumm. “Today we showed real character and determination to get the job done.

“For some time we’ve talked about becoming a side that can achieve things and move onto that next level. Today, I guess, is part of us moving in that direction. It’s a great day for everyone and just look at the people behind us, it means a lot to them and it certainly means a lot to us.”

Up against a proven force in the Saints, Exeter had to withstand some testing times during a pulsating final. However, Mumm and his fellow troops rose to the challenge and did enough to seal victory in battle.

“There were times when we were under quite a bit of pressure,” added the 30-year-old. “However, we won a key scrum just before the break and some of our defensive mauls were outstanding. For us, getting areas like that correct were key because in recent times we have been guilty of being a bit indisciplined in those areas.

“At the same time, our defensive was outstanding throughout the whole contest and in attack we showed what we are capable of in terms of scoring points. Right now I can’t speak highly enough of the boys because each and every one of them has put in a tremendous shift.

“As is often the case defence can be a real indicator of mentality and we did that well today.”
