Caines has been recognised by Exeter City Council for his achievements in the field of cookery. Born and bred in Exeter, Caines has helped put Exeter's name on the world map as a city that supports cookery.

Last July the Council unanimously agreed at an extraordinary meeting to bestow the honour of Freedom of the City on Caines.

He began his catering career at Exeter College and from there he worked under some of the great French chefs. Eventually he arrived at Gidleigh Park and in 1999 was awarded a second Michelin Star.

His business has expanded from here but his roots are still very much in Exeter, where he runs the Michael Caines Academy, which he started in 2011.

Freedom of the City is an honorary position which the City Council can bestow on anyone who has, in its opinion, undertaken something which is outstanding or has helped enhance the reputation of the city.

Thursday's ceremony takes place at Exeter's historic Guildhall at 1pm. Afterwards, at about 1.45pm, Caines will drive a flock of sheep from Dix's Field into Princesshay and down Exeter's High Street.
