Keeping it local at Living Coasts

Living Coasts in Torquay is holding its first ever locals weekend. A special weekend rate – better than half price – is available on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th May to anyone who lives in a TQ or EX postcode area.

The special event is aimed at getting local people – especially those who have not been to Living Coasts for a while - to drop in and find out what’s new. The two days will give residents the opportunity of a sneak preview before the busy summer season starts. People will need to bring a recent utility bill that includes their home address.

Spokesperson Phil Knowling said: “We’ve been here for 15 years now. Lots of local people visited early on but may not have been back that often since. They know our distinctive aviary net on the harbourside and probably think Living Coasts hasn’t changed much, but it has. There are all sorts of tropical fish, seahorses, octopus, stingrays. There are new murals and new displays and new play areas. This is our way of inviting people back in to see how we’re getting on.

“It’s great when people recommend an attraction to visitors – taxi drivers, bus drivers, shop keepers, hotel workers, they are all important for word-of-mouth. We’d love people to come to Living Coasts so they know who and what we are and why holidaymakers should visit us.

“I think the weekend will also remind people that, with Living Coasts being right on the water’s edge, the café and terrace are great places to watch the Torbay air show and all the events that take place on the Bay. There will be a new spring menu with chef’s salads alongside the traditional fish and chips and light lunches. The café is licensed, which means you can enjoy a cold beer while taking in the best views of the Bay! I wouldn’t be surprised if more people decide to take advantage of our annual passholder scheme after this weekend.”

The saving on normal entry prices over the weekend will be 50% on the gate but more than 50% if you book online. People need to bring a recent utility bill that includes their home address. The locals weekend discount is not available in conjunction with any other offer, including the Zooper ticket and the seven-day return. Living Coasts opened in June 2003. The charity attraction is home to a large colony of free-ranging penguins, as well as fur seals, wading birds, otters, auks and aquarium species. There are play areas, underwater viewing windows and a café with views across the Bay. For more information go to www.livingcoasts.org.uk or ring 01803 202470.
