In early January the shopping precinct in the heart of Tiverton will receive a makeover with improved landscaping.

The development is the first phase in a sequence of improvement work for Market Walk which will look to ensure continued enhancement for the town.

Phase one will see the western side, closest to Market Place Car Park enriched with feature paving, trees and infrastructure will be provided to enable the provision of a water fountain. Additionally, the existing drainage channel will be removed and replaced.

Further phases of development will take place within the central and eastern sections of the precinct following the completion of the initial landscaping.

As of this December all of the units within Market Walk, which is owned by Mid Devon District Council, are occupied, with 17 businesses running from the properties. This is the first time the units have been at 100% occupancy rate and the Council is hopeful that these regeneration initiatives sustain a positive prospect for the town.

Councillor Ray Stanley, Cabinet Member for Housing and Property Services said:

“Market Walk is an asset to the town and worthy of investment from the Council. Our Corporate Property and Commercial Assets team are doing an excellent job in being proactive with a series of regeneration projects planned, as well being innovative in their planning to make certain the whole district benefits.”

Councillor Richard Chesterton, Cabinet Member for Planning and Regeneration said:

“We are keen to make Mid Devon a great place to have a business. This improvement work will help to keep our area looking smart and continue to enhance the economic growth of our market towns. With the recent approval of the Lidl store and the Premier Inn taking shape, it is important for us to make sure that Tiverton town centre continues to prosper.”
