Roly Palmer, an experienced Dawlish coarse fishing expert and angling coach at Cofton Holidays, has been recognised for his work to encourage young people into angling with a prestigious Volunteering Excellence Award from the Angling Trust.
Nominated for his commitment to protecting fisheries and promoting fishing to new anglers, the award recognises Roly’s work over the past 15 years as a volunteer for the Exeter & District Angling Association.
In addition to his work for the association, Roly teaches hundreds of juniors and adults each year at Cofton Holidays, coaching guests on one of five fishing lakes at the multi-award winning holiday park, and is widely recognised as a leading level 2 coach in the local area.
Running regular family friendly coaching events, Roly encourages young people into the world of angling and has played a key part in helping the Exeter & District Angling Association’s junior membership rise by over 100 in the last couple of years through his volunteering work.
Roly commented: “It’s a great honour to receive a Volunteering Award from the Angling Trust. I love what I do at Cofton Holidays and with the Exeter & District Angling Association, as I get to pursue my passion whilst teaching and inspiring the next generation of anglers. There’s nothing better than seeing a young person fall in love with fishing, and I’m delighted to play my part in making that possible.”
Located close to the Exe Estuary and Dawlish, Cofton’s five lakes are set in the perfect location to enjoy a relaxing fishing holiday. Suitable for all angling abilities, the lakes are filled with carp varying in size including mirror carp, common carp and koi-cross commons. With 71 pegs to choose from including pegs with disabled facilities, anglers staying at Cofton are sure to find a favourite spot.
Roly offers new anglers coaching sessions so guests can make the most of their time at the lakes. From 23rd July to 29th August 2018, Fishing Tuition takes place on a Monday and a Wednesday, 10am to 4pm. Anglers will be taught how to bait a rod, basic rod setup, how to remove the hook from the fish’s mouth plus the rules and safety of Cofton’s lakes.
Fishing Tuition is £9.50 per person and includes equipment and bait, permission to fish and a 20-minute one-to-one session with Roly who will also be on hand for the rest of the day with help when required.
Anglers should note that usually a rod licence from the Environment Agency is required to fish for coarse in the UK. The Angling Trust, set up and funded by the Environment Agency and Government, promotes fishing as a sport in the UK. As Roly’s work encourages young people into the sport, Roly has permission from the Angling Trust to add course participants to his register on the day.
Fishing at Cofton Holidays is exclusively for guests staying on site. Anglers require a valid fishing ticket and should hold an Environment Agency rod licence. Senior and junior concession prices are available for daily or weekly tickets.
