Staff and councillors at Exeter City Council said they were delighted with the public response.

The City Council is now in the detailed design phase of the project. The new, modern bus station will replace the tired and dated bus station in Paris Street and will be built alongside the new St Sidwell’s Point leisure complex.

Cllr Phil Bialyk, Lead Councillor for Sport and Health & Wellbeing, said: "It's fantastic that so many people are taking an interest in the new bus station. I'd like to thank everyone who came along to this exhibition."

Representations about the overall scheme - for and against - were considered in detail by the Council when it granted conditional planning permission in January. This included the location and size of the new bus station.

"It was great to see that people reiterated their support for the city centre location and were focussing their minds on the passenger facilities and how the new bus station will function," added Cllr Bialyk.

“We will soon have a modern bus station fit for the 21st Century that, along with the St Sidwell’s Point leisure complex will form a dramatic gateway to the city. The new bus station forms part of a long-overdue regeneration of this much run down part of the city.” 

The design team will now be carefully reviewing all of the extensive feedback that has been received on the detailed designs. The outcome of this will be published alongside the detailed planning application that will be submitted later in the summer.

Plans for the new bus station are likely to include the following features identified by members of the public who attended two exhibitions and filled in feedback forms.

• A covered waiting and boarding area
• Departure information screens
• Seating and wheelchair spaces
• A staffed information counter
• Same bus usually going from the same stand • Audible information announcements • CCTV • Car/taxi drop off point • Refreshments kiosk • Cycle parking

While the new bus station is being built, a temporary bus station will need to be set up within the city centre. The City Council is looking at possible locations like the Triangle Car Park as a temporary solution, although nothing has been decided as yet.
