Eastbourne Community First Responders – Volunteer Emergency Support
Eastbourne Community First Responders are trained volunteers who work in partnership with the South East Coast Ambulance Service to respond to 999 calls. Mobilised directly by ambulance control, they often arrive at the scene of an emergency within minutes, providing life-saving care before an ambulance crew is on site.
Responders are based within their local communities, usually operating within a three-mile radius of their home or workplace. This local presence allows them to offer immediate support for a wide range of medical emergencies, including cardiac arrest, breathing difficulties, seizures and more.
Key facts about the service:
Trained in Emergency Life Support

Serve Eastbourne and surrounding towns and villages
Operate as volunteers under NHS ambulance partnership
Provide rapid care while ambulance crews are en route
The group supports Eastbourne, Polegate, Hailsham, Herstmonceux, Pevensey Bay, Westham, and neighbouring communities. While they do not replace paramedics or ambulance teams, they play a vital role in bridging the gap when time is critical.
Eastbourne CFRs operate entirely through volunteer time and fundraising efforts. Their impact relies on local support, equipment availability and community awareness.
