Supporting young people who care for others, this East Sussex service helps children and teenagers balance responsibility with the support they need to stay healthy, connected and confident.

East Sussex Young Carers – Supporting Young Lives in Caring Roles

Run by the charity Imago Community and funded by East Sussex County Council, East Sussex Young Carers supports children and young people aged 5 to 18 who care for a parent or family member living with long-term illness, disability, mental health difficulties or substance misuse.

Too often, these young people go unnoticed. While more than 3,000 Young Carers are already known in East Sussex, research suggests up to 11,000 others remain hidden. This service works with schools, communities and healthcare professionals to identify carers early and provide timely support.

Key support includes:

  • One-to-one sessions and check-ins

  • In-school support and advocacy

  • Access to workshops and peer connection

  • Guidance for families and professionals

  • Signposting to long-term care services

By recognising and responding to each young person's needs, East Sussex Young Carers helps them stay engaged in education, improve wellbeing and build a future beyond their caring responsibilities. Referrals can be made by schools, families or professionals with consent.
