East Sussex WRAS – Emergency Wildlife Rescue and Care
East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS) is a registered charity offering 24/7 emergency help for wildlife across East Sussex. Founded by Trevor Weeks in 1996, the organisation has grown from a one-person initiative into a vital rescue service with five ambulances, a fully equipped hospital and over 130 volunteers.
Based in Whitesmith, the WRAS hospital is registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and can care for more than 250 animals at any one time. The charity deals with everything from road-injured badgers and orphaned fox cubs to sick hedgehogs and entangled seabirds.
Core services include:
Emergency wildlife rescue and ambulance callouts
Hospital care for injured or orphaned animals
Rehabilitation and safe release into the wild
A 24-hour helpline for public advice and emergencies
Volunteer roles in feeding, cleaning, reception and rescue
WRAS also runs a charity shop in Eastbourne to raise funds and relies entirely on donations, sponsorship and volunteer support. New volunteers are always welcome and are asked to commit to one regular shift each week.
If you find a wild animal in distress or want to get involved in their work, the WRAS team is ready to help. Every rescue makes a difference.
