Local schoolchildren meet England rugby legend

Local primary school children competing in an under-8s tag rugby tournament recently got a big surprise when former England and Leicester rugby captain Martin Johnson turned up to present their medals.

The recent tournament saw 20 teams competing against each other in 5-minute tag rugby matches, before Cottingham C of E Primary School and Wilbarston Primary School faced each other in the final.

In a hard fought match, Cottingham were named tournament runners-up, losing by a whisker (7 -6) to Wilbarston.

Emma Tayler, Head Teacher at Cottingham C of E Primary School, said:The tournament was very exciting and the children improved with every match. We are really proud of the team, and receiving their medals from Martin Johnson was the icing on the cake – it rounded the day off perfectly!

The tournament was held in Hallaton with seven primary schools taking part from Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and Rutland.
