Save Furness General Hospital Maternity Unit

The Background

The maternity unit at Furness General Hospital in Barrow-in-Furness is facing the threat of being downgraded in a forthcoming review of services by Morecambe Bay University Hospitals Trust. Losing consultant-led care in Barrow would result in women facing complicated births being forced to travel an hour to Lancaster.

Complications often only arise during labour itself and the prospect of having to be whisked to Lancaster for specialist treatment (either by road or air) could put mothers and their unborn children at greater risk.
