I’m Valerie Holden and I work in Barrow Borough Council’s Policy and Regeneration Department.

My role is to attract funding to the Borough and to ensure that once it’s in; it stays in. To do this projects have run on time and to budget. They also have to achieve their targets, otherwise the funding may have to be given back. We seek funding for the Borough Council and also for other public organisations, private companies and the voluntary sector.

Part of my remit also is to chair the Strategic Partnership’s Regeneration Publicity Sub-group. This committee provides the steer for the Love Barrow campaign.

Our department has delivered, funded or monitored many projects over 15 years. These include The Nan Tait Building, Ramsden Hall, Hindpool Urban Park, Channelside Business Park, Waterside House Business Centre, Dalton Road Street improvements, Buccleuch Dock Promenade, Craven House and Furness House refurbishments, the new Stoller’s retail outlet and the new Travelodge, Furness Enterprise Business Grants and Loans, The Workshops, Duke of Edinburgh Hotel refurbishment, Cooke’s Building refurbishment, Commercial Property Grants etc.

We are now working on Ramsden Business Park, the Town Centre and Marina Village. We are working with Barrow Regeneration and the County Council to deliver the Barrow Masterplan.

It is the best feeling to see businesses getting going, people enjoying their work in quality accommodation, people taking up work opportunities and others putting time and effort into their communities with funding they have control over.
