This Saturday sees the streets of Dalton come alive as Carnival comes to town.

Once more, the town will be an explosion of colour, music, and laughter, with a whole afternoon’s entertainment planned for the many who will line the streets to watch the parade before gathering at Dowdales School Field to carry on the festivities.

Every Carnival has to have a theme, and this year it’s Transport Through The Ages. Each year, local businesses, and groups are challenged to come up with original and creative designs for floats to take part in the parade. This year it’s expected that six floats will be taking part, including entrants from Leonard Cheshire, Poole Townsend, Dalton Rugby Club, Crooklands Junior Rugby and 6th Duddon Scouts.

Also featuring in the parade will be 3 bands; Dalton Town Band, Milnthorpe Steel band and Barrow’s St. Andrews Pipers who will entertain the crowds with their musical skill and diversity.

This year’s Carnival Queen is 14 year old Grace Milner, who will process through the streets, along with retiring Carnival Queen Sara Walker and Askam’s Carnival Queen Teoni Grierson.

The parade leaves Tudor Square at 1pm, travelling through town and eventually arriving at Dowdales School field at around 2.30pm.

Entertainment on the field starts at 3pm and last till 5pm. This year sees a dance competition taking place at Dowdales School (which starts at 3pm), and a great array of stalls on the field. Old favourites like Donkey Rides and face painting will be available, and several exhibition stands will be present from the likes of Utility warehouse, Avon and Slimming World.

All in all it promises to be a fantastic day, now we just need the sunshine! We’ll keep our fingers crossed that this great weather we’ve been blessed with continues.
