If the last 16 months or so has taught us anything – it’s the need for escapism! Something to take us out of our normal everyday lives (not that the last 16 months have been that normal) and disappear, immerse ourselves in another world, with exciting characters and have an adventure or two.

That’s the joy of reading – you go anywhere but still remain in the same place.

This October Cumbria Libraries are bringing out a new reading challenge for young adults. The challenge is designed for children at Secondary schools and is called Reading Riot.

It aims to inspire and encourage children to read for pleasure and make reading for fun something that they take with them into their adult lives.

Our children have been hit hard by the pandemic, they have missed interacting with friends, being part of sports clubs and groups – reading is a great way for them to have fun and escape the boredom of everyday life.

For the Reading Riot Challenge our libraries are encouraging young people to do a pick and mix activity.

You can select from a series of tasks:

  • · Read a book by an author which you haven’t read before.
  • · Read a graphic novel.
  • · Listen to an audio book.
  • · Try a new genre.

There will be eye catching displays and promotions within all our libraries to appeal to young adults. There will also be design and art competitions and opportunities to produce and share digital animations and book vlogs with libraries.

Reading Riot will also include engaging content for our libraries YouTube Channel and other social media platforms and also plans to shine a light on the many services that our local libraries offer to young people too.

Reading can be transformative and here at thebestof we hope that our young people get on board with this challenge and discover the magic of reading for pleasure.

The Reading Riot Challenge starts on 4th October 2021 until 3rd January 2022.
