We recently visited Guernsey for the first time, staying nine nights, at the OGH Hotel.

Firstly, all the staff were fantastic. Everyone was cheerful, professional with a high level of customer service. We did find, on the odd occasion, in the bar area, that they were overstretched which led to a long wait to order a drink or food, but we could see that they were working flat out. The valet parking is a nice touch and our room was cleaned and tidied thoroughly every day. On returning to the hotel each time we had been out, we were always greeted warmly.

Our king room had a very comfortable super king bed, was a good size overall and was well equipped. We were at the back of the hotel overlooking the kitchen area which, although slightly disappointing, was understandable as we hadn’t booked ‘a view’. There was a background hum from outside fans, but we didn’t really notice this after the first day or so.

What we did feel, however, was that the room, being in this position in the hotel, should have been decorated in brighter colours or light, neutral tones, as those king rooms shown on the website are. Ours was all dark browns and dark beiges, with heavy brown curtains, making it feel unwelcoming and without a lot of natural light due to its position and net curtain over the bottom half of the window. It just didn’t make us feel 5 star and ‘uplifted’ each time we entered it, which was a shame.

Breakfast in the Brasserie, which was light and airy, was excellent, with a wide choice, particularly of cooked options. We also ate several times in the bar area, the Olive Grove and the Brasserie, in the evening, and the food was very good.

The pool area is sheltered with comfortable sun loungers, although these did get full, on occasion, as our weather was hot and sunny.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay and the hotel clearly has a large, returning customer base, but it didn’t quite feel 5 star for us, mainly due to our room.

Moving forward, I think thought needs to be given to how the hotel maintains the ‘old world, traditional charm and decor’ that many of the returning guests obviously love, balanced with making it feel fresher, lighter, brighter and updated in some areas.
