Wimbledon Sports Week – 25th October to 29th October 2010

The great news is that the Wimbledon Sports Week – organised by the lovely people behind Wimbledon Going for Gold initiative – is taking place again this year in and around Wimbledon.

Here’s some background... Last year the Wimbledon Going for Gold organisation... who are one and the same good people from the Merton Chamber of Commerce, based in central Wimbledon, hosted the first ever Wimbledon Sports Week.

And wow, what a success it was!! There were actually far too many events going on all over the local area to mention individually, however I’m really pleased to say that The Best of Wimbledon and Merton got quite involved in several of the events, so I feel that I can reliably offer an informed opinion of the entire week’s events.

To start with there was the Business to Business Sports Challenge with a 5-a-Side Football Tournament hosted by Goals Soccer Centre in New Malden. 16 teams participated and I can pretty much boast with pride that our The Best of Wimbledon and Merton football team were beaten finalists by no other than a team of football coaches from AFC Wimbledon. Not bad going, I’d say!

There was also a Tennis Tournament held at David Lloyd Centre in Raynes Park, as well as an extremely enjoyable Golf Day at the Royal Wimbledon Golf Club.

The Grand Finale evening, held at the Antoinette Hotel in Wimbledon was attended by many participants, supporters and sponsors of the Sports Week initiative... and what a grand night we all had, which included the awarding of prizes for all Sports Challenge winners and runner ups.

However one of the highlights of the entire Wimbledon Sports Week calendar was the week-long event held in the Wimbledon town centre – on the station forecourt and the Piazza... you can’t get more central, or more convenient for that matter, than that!

This event included a whole range of sporting activities for all the family, aimed to attract local people to try sport and to get involved. To name just a few of the organisations who got involved were AFC Wimbledon, The All England Club, Goals Soccer Centre, David Lloyd Leisure, GLL and Merton and Sutton Primary Care Trust.

The Sports Week event was a resounding success with, literally, hundreds upon hundreds of local people getting involved and getting mobilised.

And this year the Wimbledon Sports Week is happening all over again, Hooray!
