Last week I was fortunate enough to have been invited to a very interesting ‘taster event’ at what is currently being billed as “Wimbledon’s newest restaurant”.

40 The Hill on Wimbledon Hill Road hosted the event for a select group of influential Wimbledonians on Wednesday evening, 22nd February 2012. Upon arrival at the restaurant I was greeted by Martin McHugh, the marketing man at 40 The Hill, proffering a delicious and refreshing glass of Prosecco, an extra dry sparkling wine – what a great way to end a busy work day!

Martin informed me that the restaurant quietly opened just before Christmas and is building up a following among fans of the expertly made, and artistically presented, Modern European cuisine.

For the uninitiated – such as I! – Modern European is an evolution of the now familiar European cuisines such as French, Italian and Spanish, linked to our very own, and often underrated, British cuisine into a modern, fresh and delicious dining experience, made to exacting standards from the very best ingredients.

Whilst effortlessly moving on to my second glass of Prosecco, we were ushered into the restaurant’s interior dining area where we sampled dishes from the actual menu. These included an expertly cooked wild mushroom risotto – often seen, but rarely perfected like this one; a sea bream fillet accompanied by creamed potatoes with a Seville orange note and sweet, thyme scented onions; and finally a delicate and perfectly judged juniper glazed duck breast with buttered pear. No wonder all the guests hovered around the tables displaying the sample dishes... they were all absolutely delicious!

Apparently 40 The Hill will now be staging a series of these taster events over the coming months, so if you’re truly fortunate enough to have an invitation pop into your email inbox or on your doormat, make sure you clear your diary and get down there – it is well worth it!

Their marketing blurb tells me that 40 The Hill is open from 9am, seven days a week and offers a full a la carte menu with a special Prix Fixe menu for a quick lunch or a pre-theatre treat.
