Your Autumn Home Maintenance Jobs

Late summer and early autumn is the best time to start protecting your home in time for the winter and we recommend that you carry out the following jobs whilst the there is a decent amount of light and before the leaves fall:

  • Guttering – clean your gutters out before the leaves fall, then install a gutter guard at the downspout to stop it from blocking up.
  • Draughts - As the weather gets colder, draughts are a real problem. Check doors and windows to see if there are gaps. If you find any, why not purchase some draught excluders that can be easily glued or tacked.
  • Heating – your boiler and heaters will be used more during the winter, so check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working correctly.
  • Loft – To keep the house warm, check your loft insulation – it should be 270mm in depth.  Whilst you’re up there, have a close look at your pipes and ensure that they are well insulated to protect them from freezing.
  • Patio and Paths - give patio and paths a thorough clean to help prevent slipping and accidents in icy weather.
  • Outdoor Lighting - Check outside lights are working well and that all bulbs are in good order.

Follow these tips and you will give your home a DIY health check to prevent any problems arising.
