When you stand at the petrol pump do you check, and then double check, that you're filling your car up with the correct fuel?

Have you ever made the mistake of putting the wrong fuel in your car?

Do you know what you would do if you did accidentally put the wrong fuel in?

We've got some top tips of what to do if it happens to you:

  1. Don't Panic!
  2. If you're lucky enough to have noticed your mistake before driving away from the garage, don't turn on the ignition or start your engine!  Why? By circulating the contaminated fuel, the damage and cost will increase.
  3. If you have driven away and then you remember what you did or something happens to your car, call your breakdown service immediately. Time is a critical factor.

If your car runs on diesel and you have put petrol in it, the petrol will act as a solvent, removing the essential lubrication the diesel normally provides, and cause the metal parts to grate against each other.

Putting diesel into a petrol car isn't as damaging but will still cause your engine to smoke and run badly.
