The Best Western Valley Hotel in Ironbridge was the first in the county to receive the prestigious gold award under the Green Tourism Business Scheme when they were first launched and now they have scooped it once again.

The hotel in Ironbridge, which is assessed every two years as part of the awards scheme, had to go through a rigorous inspection to show efforts were continuing to being made to be environmentally-friendly. Lisa Snape, sales manager at the hotel, said:

"When we were first awarded the gold we were extremely proud to be the first hotel in Shropshire to achieve it. We are still only a handful of hotels in the county to hold the highest of the green awards.

We had to demonstrate we were committed to sustainability, managing waste and energy consumption, reducing our carbon footprint and ensuring that we promoted an awareness of the environment and the community through staff training.

Over the last four years since first being presented with the award we have continued to look at how we can be green."

She said:

"We use low energy light bulbs and have sensors in place so lights cannot be left on. We also have measures in place to control the heating so energy is not wasted. Recycling is also a big thing for us and we ensure that as much of what we used can be recycled as possible.

The hotel also became one of a handful in the county to have an electric car charging point installed. It came after Best Western recognised there was a real need and more demand for 'green' transport.

Mrs Snape said: "It is very important to us that we make sure we are doing all we can to be environmentally-friendly.

Sometimes it is the little things that make a big difference in saving energy."

She said the award was also down to the efforts of the staff to look at ways of being environmentally friendly.

Mrs Snape added: "It is important for us as a business to be more efficient. We also get positive feedback from guests and visitors.

Hopefully the green award will attract more people to choose the Best Western Valley Hotel when they are looking for somewhere to stay as more people are looking for such qualities these days."
