Having heard lots of positive comment about The Orchard in Newport, I felt compelled to book a meal and see for myself what all the fuss is about! From the first phone call to make our reservation I received a warm, professional yet friendly response – already I had experienced the exceptional customer service that I had heard about - and I hadn’t even stepped through the door. This gave me a good feeling about the restaurant and the fine dining experience that awaited me.
The first thing that struck me about the restaurant is the charming Georgian frontage; situated on Newport High Street the facade on the beautiful building gave an exciting hint of what awaited us inside. Restaurant owners, Peter and Sarah Robert, have sympathetically updated the interior of the restaurant to be in-keeping with era of the building but with a unique contemporary twist.
As you enter the building you are greeted by the welcoming aroma of sous chefs preparing freshly cooked food – and if you look to your right you can see them busying away in the kitchen. Our waitress for the evening greeted us and gave us a choice of two tables; one in the main restaurant with its deep malt chocolate walls and the other in the conservatory. With the warm evening, we opted for the light and airy conservatory.
The rave reviews surrounding this family run restaurant speak of its award-winning food accompanied with impeccable service. The owners, Peter and Sarah Robert, lead by example with traditional restaurant service and values. Our waitress for the evening, Tracy, offered us outstanding old fashioned service that is not always expected in restaurants but is greatly appreciated. She was attentive all evening but not imposing, which was to our liking.
We perused the menu while we devoured a delightful amuse-bouche; then went straight for the main course - Blue cheese crusted pork escalope with roasted beetroot and apple sage veloute, served over a mustard mash for me while my partner opted for a Trio of spring lamb cutlets and rosemary and red currant jus with spring buttered new potatoes.
The waitress enthused about the locally sourced produce on The Orchards seasonally changing menus. It’s so exciting to discover a real gastro experience in the heart of Newport.
Whilst our main courses were being cooked we enjoyed our refreshments from the restaurants carefully chosen drinks list as we polished off fresh bread with a delicious oil and Balsamic dip. Just when I thought I couldn't be any happier, the food arrived. Our meals were well presented with a fresh seasonal vegetable accompaniment. The lamb was succulent and the blend of favours with blue cheese and pork combination was delectable.
Having cleaned our plates, our waitress presented us with an intermezzo of an orange sorbet palate cleanser to prepare ourselves for our inevitable dessert!
Even though it meant adjusting several belt notches, how could I not? The list of options all sounded appealing. I had already eyed-up the Vanilla panacotta with rhubarb and ginger compote and I was not for turning! My partner hasn’t got a particularly sweet tooth but equally does not like to let me eat alone (such a trooper) and ordered the Artisan cheeseboard which was an excellent decision as it literally was a wooden board heaving with Moysden’s cheeses and biscuits with a slice of fruit cake!
This is a great restaurant with top-notch food. If you are look for a fine dining in the heart of Shropshire then make you reservation at The Orchard in Newport today by calling 01952 427470 or to visit their website click here.
