Myths and Facts about PAT testing

Portable appliance testing (PAT) is the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use, but with so many myths around about how and when you need to do it,in Madeley, Gra-Bern Electrical Contractors in Telford tell us the facts.

PAT Testing is NOT compulsory - the law simply requires an employer to ensure that their electrical equipment is maintained to prevent danger. It does not say how this should be done or how often.

The frequency of testing depends on the type of equipment and the environment where it is used – for example - a power tool used on a construction site should be examined more frequently than a lamp in a hotel bedroom.

There is NO legal requirement to label equipment that has been inspected or tested – however a record or label can be useful for monitoring and reviewing.

New equipment does not require a formal portable appliance inspection or test – but a simple visual check is recommended to ensure the item is not damaged.

The person carrying out PAT Testing should be competent -  if you work in a low risk environment, visual inspections can be carried out by a sensible (competent) member of staff providing they have enough knowledge and training. However, when undertaking combined inspection and testing, a greater level of knowledge and experience is needed.

If you would like your electrical equipment and appliances testing by a competent person, contact Gra-Bern Electrical Contractors in Telford today on 01952 426218.
