Bosses at automotive glazing firm, National Windscreens, are hoping to raise hundreds of pounds for the charity with donations from customers.

John Smallman, co-owner of National Windscreens in Telford, Oswestry and Wolverhampton, said he knew how important the air ambulance was in the region after being seriously injured in a crash a decade ago.

Mr Smallman said: "I had a very serious motorcycle accident and even though I didn't use the Midlands Air Ambulance I know how important it is for crashes such as the one I was involved in.

"The journey to the hospital would have been much quicker and more comfortable had it have been in the helicopter.

"Without Government funding we know they rely on the work of businesses like ourselves so we hope we can raise some money to help keep it in the sky."

The fundraising will kick off by asking customers when they have minor work done that we don’t usually charge for to make a donation to the charity.

The fundraising will be taking place at all three depots, Oswestry, Telford and Wolverhampton.

Mr Smallman added: "Our staff are regularly replacing rear view mirrors after they are accidently knocked off while the owner is cleaning the car or reaching for something or children playing in cars knock them off. We don’t usually charge for such minor jobs as it is part of our customer service.

"The customers often find the sticky pads or glue off the High Street doesn't work so they pop down to one of our three depots.

"Our staff have been replacing them for free even though the customer always offers something so we thought we could raise several hundred pound throughout the year by asking the customer to give a minimum donation of £2 to the charity."

Staff at the Midlands Air Ambulance said they were delighted to be chosen charity of the year by National Windscreens.

Maria Jones, fundraising manager for the charity, said: "Like John I was also in a very serious accident and the helicopter was not used so often then so I had to endure the painful journey to the hospital by road.

"The generous efforts of people and companies like National Windscreens is amazing and we are so grateful."
