Lisa Snape, sales and marketing manager at the family-run Best Western Valley Hotel in Ironbridge, said the hotel had always proven a popular choice with leisure groups because of its location nestled in the heart of the World Heritage Site.

But, she put the recent upturn in bookings down to the fact that people were starting to spend again as a result of positive vibes about the economy.

She said: “It’s certainly proving to be one of our busiest years yet for visiting groups.

“Bookings so far this year have been coming in thick and fast from a variety of groups including car clubs, gardening clubs, ramblers associations and various other societies.

“We think it’s a strong indicator that with greater confidence in the economy people are starting to spend again and tourism is on the up.

“After such a downturn in the economy this is welcome news for businesses in the local area.”

The hotel offers a variety of packages and itineraries to groups wishing to book accommodation in Ironbridge and enjoy the World Heritage site.

“There is so much on offer here in Ironbridge and we are getting bookings from groups across the UK,” added Mrs Snape.

“We recently hosted 36 guests from the Daventry Ramblers and we have bookings in for the remainder of this year and 2015.

“It’s fantastic that people are choosing to book group leisure breaks here at The Valley as this in turn has a positive knock-on-effect for other businesses located in the town and elsewhere across Shropshire.”

Staff at the hotel hope to see a continued rise in group leisure bookings throughout the summer and winter months with some groups making return visits.

Peter Greeve, event organiser for the Daventry Ramblers, said he and other walkers would most certainly be making another visit to The Valley in the future.

The 71-year-old said: “Everything is of such a high standard and what we all loved the most was the teamwork displayed by staff.

“We had the same friendly, efficient response from staff throughout the hotel whether we were in the reception, the lounge, bar, or dining room.

“I came away somehow feeling really sorry that our stay at The Valley was over. I felt a real affinity for the place.

“Without hesitation I would recommend The Valley to other ramblers or groups wanting to explore Shropshire.

“It’s a great base for lots of walks and we managed to tie in many of the historical sites and museums with our walks.”

For environmentally educated groups and consumers staff at The Valley have developed the Green Group Package helping tourists to lower their carbon footprint.

The hotel was recently awarded gold from the Green Tourism Business Scheme for the package which offers local low carbon activities and shopping and promotes green travel, locally sourced produce and use of products which have been fairly traded.
